Amsons Group, led by Tanzanian tycoon Edha Nahdi, has committed to constructing 10 Level 4 Mother-and-Child hospitals across Kenya over the next three years in a KSh 4.5 billion (US$35 million) grant aimed at reducing maternal and newborn deaths.

Speaking at State House, Nairobi, during the signing of a Letter of Intent on April 29, President William Ruto said the Amsons Mama na Mtoto Kwanza facilities will be established in Nairobi (two), Kwale, Mombasa, Garissa, Kisumu, Embu, Nakuru, Uasin Gishu and West Pokot.

He said the project aligns with ongoing health sector reforms under the Health Systems Strengthening programme aimed at expanding access to Level 4 and 5 facilities across the country.

“The support by Amsons Group, a corporate investor in Kenya associated with both Bamburi Cement Plc and East Africa Portland Cement, is a timely intervention. With the support of Amsons Group, the government will now be in a better position to guarantee maternal health and curb maternal and newborn mortality as part of our national development agenda,” Ruto said.

The hospitals, each with a 250-bed capacity, are expected to strengthen emergency obstetric care, referrals, diagnostics and inpatient services, particularly in underserved and high-burden regions.

President Ruto said the government will support implementation through staffing, medical supplies and integration into the national health system, adding that the partnership marks a significant step in improving maternal healthcare outcomes.

He noted that the company had not only chosen Kenya as an investment destination but had also demonstrated its commitment to social development by supporting the transformation of the healthcare system.

Amsons Group Managing Director Edha Nahdi said the initiative reflects the firm’s shared prosperity model and long-term social investment agenda across Africa.

He noted that the group operates in more than seven countries and holds controlling stakes in several firms, including Bamburi Cement and East African Portland Cement Plc.

“Amsons Group and its 16 subsidiaries operate in more than seven countries in Africa under a treasured shared prosperity model. Under this model, we are committed to playing a key part in Kenya’s first-world transformation journey,” Nahdi said.

He added that the investment is part of the company’s commitment to supporting Kenya’s healthcare transformation agenda and reducing preventable maternal and infant deaths in vulnerable counties.

On April 28, Health Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale said that the discussions came at a time when Kenya continues to grapple with challenges in maternal and newborn health outcomes, especially in rural and marginalized regions where access to specialized care remains limited.

The initiative is expected to align with ongoing efforts under Universal Health Coverage reforms.

According to Duale, the project could help decentralize maternal health services and reduce delays in access to emergency obstetric care.
