Sabina Chege Wanjiru is a Kenyan politician currently serving as a nominated MP in the National Assembly.

A seasoned media practitioner, Sabina transitioned into politics in 2013, winning the Murang’a County Woman Representative seat under The National Alliance (TNA) with a landslide 96.6% of the vote. 

Educational Background.

Her academic journey began at Kinyona Primary School. She later joined Mugoiri Girls High School, a reputable institution known for nurturing strong female leaders.

It was here that Sabina’s leadership qualities began to emerge, setting the stage for her future in public service.

Sabina enrolled at the University of Nairobi, earning a bachelor’s degree in education, while her interest in media and public engagement led her to pursue a master’s degree in communication, also at the University of Nairobi. 

Between 2013 and 2017, she undertook a second master’s program, further deepening her expertise in governance and public affairs.

Currently, Sabina is pursuing a Doctorate (PhD).

Career

Sabina first captured national attention in the 1990s as Rehema in the beloved Swahili soap opera Tausi, a role that made her a household name.

Her screen presence opened doors in the entertainment industry, including a stint as a dancer and video vixen in Benga musician John De’Mathew’s hit song Njata Yakwa.

From 2002 to 2005, she worked as a radio presenter at Kameme FM, before moving to Space Africa as a Regional Manager in 2005.

By 2007, she had joined the Kenya Broadcasting Corporation (KBC) as a Programmes Controller, overseeing operations across multiple radio stations.

Political Career

Sabina joined politics in 2013, winning the Murang’a County Woman Representative seat on The National Alliance (TNA) ticket with a commanding 96.6% of the vote 

She was re-elected in 2017 under the Jubilee Party, continuing her tenure until 2022, when she was succeeded by Beatrice Njeri Maina.

In Parliament, Sabina Chege quickly distinguished herself through her leadership and dedication to public service. 

She served as the Chairperson of the Departmental Committee on Education, Research, and Technology, where she played a pivotal role in shaping educational policy and promoting research initiatives.

From 2017, she chaired the Parliamentary Committee on Health, overseeing critical health legislation and advocating for improved healthcare systems across Kenya.

She has sponsored key legislation, including:

  • The Kenya National Blood Transfusion Service Bill (2019), which aimed to commercialize and streamline blood donation services.
  • The Breastfeeding Mothers Bill advocates for workplace accommodations for nursing mothers.

In 2022, she was nominated as an MP and briefly expressed interest in becoming Deputy President William Ruto’s running mate, though she later supported Raila Odinga.

By May 2023, she pledged allegiance to President Ruto, leading to her expulsion from the Jubilee Party.

Philanthropy and Awards

Beyond her roles in media and politics, Sabina Wanjiru Chege has made a significant impact through philanthropy, particularly in youth empowerment and education.

She is the founder and director of the Sabina Wanjiru Foundation, an initiative dedicated to mentorship and student recognition programs in Murang’a County.

The foundation works closely with the National Government Affirmative Action Fund (NGAAF) to support underprivileged students, offering scholarships, mentorship sessions, and career guidance.

Through this partnership, Sabina has helped bridge educational gaps and uplift young people from marginalized communities.

Her philanthropic efforts have earned her widespread admiration, especially for her hands-on involvement in community outreach.
