Evance Ochieng Owino, widely known as Prince Indah, is a Kenyan musician and composer recognized as one of the leading figures in modern Ohangla music.
He was born on August 9, 1994, in Murumba village, Siaya County, and is among the most watched Kenyan artists on YouTube.
Early Life and Education
Prince Indah is the third of five children born to Meshack Owino and Caroline Achieng’.
He spent his early years in Huruma Flats, Nairobi, before his father’s death in 2003 forced the family to return to their rural home in Murumba Village, Siaya County.
His primary education began at Daima Primary School in Huruma, where he attended through Class 3.
After moving to Siaya, he transferred to Oloma Murumba Primary School, completing his KCPE in 2008 with an impressive 360 marks.
In 2010, he joined Missions of Hope High School in Machakos County. His education ended abruptly in 2012 when his mother fell ill.

At 18, Indah made the difficult decision to drop out of Form Three to care for her.
She passed away in 2013, leaving him fully orphaned with no financial support for his education.
With no school fees money and no relatives to support him, Indah turned to mjengo (manual construction labor) in Nairobi to survive.
It was during this period, frequenting nightclubs in Huruma, that his musical journey began.
Captivated by live Ohangla performances, he would watch drummers closely, tapping rhythms and shaking ajawa (shakers) beside the drum sets.
His passion caught the attention of Emma Jalamo, a prominent Ohangla artist and his paternal uncle, who invited him to join the Ramogi Ohangla Rhumba (R.O.R) band.
Starting as a percussionist and backup singer, Indah quickly proved his worth through cooperation and dedication, eventually becoming a curtain-raiser for Jalamo before launching his solo career in 2014.
Career
Working under Jalamo, whom he considered a king due to his experience and massive industry following, Indah positioned himself as a devoted son figure.
Since Jalamo is regarded as the “King of Ohangla,” Indah adopted the name “Prince”, the son of the King, adding to his local name “Indah” (meaning “light” in Luo), creating his full stage name “Prince Indah.”
In September 2014, Prince Indah released his debut album “Cinderella,” featuring tracks including “Cinderella,” “Nyakisumu Pt 1,” “Pokna,” “Uchumi,” and “Ken Soldier.”
The album garnered significant attention and marked his official entry into the solo music scene.
By December 2016, he launched his second album, “Tenda Wema,” which marked a pivotal moment in his career.
This launch coincided with his departure from R.O.R to establish his own band, Malaika Ohangla Rhumba Band (M.O.R), now comprising 20 members and two managers.
In June 2017, he began recording his third album, “Weche Hera,” launching it in November of the same year.
The album included the controversial hit “Nyakisumu Part 2,” which gained him massive fame and cemented his status in the Kenyan music scene.

The couple held their grand traditional wedding ceremony on March 13, 2024, in Rongo, Migori County, which blended traditional Luo rites with contemporary glamour.
The event was attended by major figures in the entertainment industry, politicians, and cultural leaders.
The couple has a daughter named Camara.
Despite his fame, Prince Indah maintains a private family life, occasionally sharing glimpses of his personal experiences through his music.
He is known as a deeply spiritual, family-oriented person who has remained grounded despite his success.
While his exact net worth is not publicly confirmed, he is considered one of the financially successful Ohangla artists in Kenya.
