Stephen Mogaka is a Kenyan politician and the Member of Parliament for West Mugirango, Nyamira County, under the Jubilee Party (JP).
Early life and education
There is currently limited publicly available information about Stephen Mogaka’s early life as he chooses not to publicly disclose.
Stephen Mogaka pursued his secondary education at Ruiru High School, where he first obtained his Kenya Junior Secondary Examination (KJSE) certificate in 1978.
He continued at the same institution, completing his Kenya Certificate of Education (O-Level) in 1980, where he attained Division I.
In 1981, he joined Kagumo High School for his Advanced Level studies. After two years, in 1982, he completed his Advanced Certificate of Education (A-Level) in Kenya with three principal passes and one subsidiary pass.
He enrolled at the University of Nairobi in 1984, where he pursued a Bachelor of Commerce (B.Com), Accounting option, and graduated in 1987.
A decade later, in 1998, he returned to the University of Nairobi to pursue a degree in law. Between 1998 and 2002, he pursued his Bachelor of Laws (LLB, Hons.) at the University of Nairobi, graduating with distinction.
To qualify as an advocate, he proceeded to the Kenya School of Law, where he completed his Diploma in Legal Studies in 2004.
Later, he enrolled in a Master of Laws (LLM) program at the University of Nairobi, which he partially completed.
In addition to his formal degrees, Mogaka also pursued professional accounting training with the Kenya Accountants and Secretaries National Examinations Board (KASNEB), completing up to the CPA Section IV level.
Career
Professional career
Mogaka’s professional career began in 1987, immediately after completing his commerce degree, when he joined Southern Credit Bank Ltd as a Credit Officer, a position he held until 1989.
In 1989, he joined the Kenya Commercial Bank (KCB), where he served for over a decade in various roles until 2003.
Over this period, he rose through different managerial ranks, serving as Human Resource Manager, Corporate Relationship Manager, Area Credit Manager (South-Western Area), Retail Accounts Officer, Advances Control Officer, Securities Manager, and eventually as Branch Manager.
After leaving KCB, Mogaka moved to Transnational Bank in 2003, where he worked as Deputy Managing Director and Senior Manager for Enterprise Risk Management until 2005.
In 2005, he joined Equity Bank as the Head of Debt Recovery and Business Development, a position he held until 2007.
That same year, in 2007, he transitioned into private legal practice and co-founded Musyoki Mogaka & Company Advocates, where he became the Managing Partner.
He led the firm from 2007 until 2022, gaining recognition as a seasoned advocate with interests in commercial law, property, and litigation.

Throughout his professional journey, Mogaka also became a member of several professional associations, including the Kenya Institute of Bankers (KIB), the Institute of Certified Public Accountants of Kenya (ICPAK), and the Law Society of Kenya (LSK).
Political career
Stephen Mogaka first contested for the West Mugirango parliamentary seat in the 2017 General Election, though he was unsuccessful.
He remained active in politics and returned in 2022 to contest the same seat and running on a Jubilee Party ticket, he won the election held on 9 August 2022.
In September 2022, just weeks after his swearing-in, he launched a student sponsorship initiative to support needy students in West Mugirango. The program covered school fees, uniforms, and other essentials, enabling hundreds of children to resume their schooling.
In 2023, Polster Rankings named him the best-performing MP in Nyamira County, reflecting his popularity and effectiveness on the ground.
Advocacy
In December 2023, Mogaka filed a petition at the High Court, which resulted in the temporary suspension of the prosecution of the Controller of Budget, Margaret Nyakang’o, a move that placed him at the center of a high-profile national debate on accountability and governance.

In 2024, he championed the boda boda sector, launching training programs for riders on road safety, first aid, and basic mechanics, while also exploring sustainable financing models to support the industry.
