The Kenya Prisons Service has honoured 41 officers with Presidential Awards and Honors in recognition of their service and achievements.
Commissioner General of Prisons Patrick Mwiti Aranduh presided over the ceremony on August 14, where the officers, drawn from different ranks, were recognized.
Aranduh said the honours extended beyond the individual recipients and are a reflection of the collective efforts of colleagues and institutions that support officers in carrying out their duties.
“While these honours are conferred upon individuals, they represent a collective achievement of the Kenya Prisons Service. Every award reflects the dedication, teamwork and support of colleagues and institutions that enable our officers to discharge their duties,” Commissioner General of Prisons Patrick said.
Senior Sergeant Douglas Mulando was among the officers honoured after receiving the Head of State Commendation (HSC).
Beyond his service in the Kenya Prisons Service, Mulando has earned recognition as a weightlifting champion, and his sporting achievements have brought pride to the institution.
The Kenya Prisons Service said the awards recognized the dedication, teamwork and commitment demonstrated by its officers in carrying out their duties.
Presidential Recognition of Kenya Prisons Officers
Kenya Prisons Service officers who demonstrate exceptional performance and commitment to duty can receive national honours conferred by the President.
The recognition covers various forms of service, including outstanding performance, bravery, discipline and years of dedicated work within the correctional system.
Among the honours awarded to prison officers is the Head of State Commendation (HSC), alongside service and long-service medals.
The awards can be presented during official ceremonies involving officers from different ranks.
Such recognition celebrates individual officers while also acknowledging the wider efforts of the Kenya Prisons Service in maintaining security, supporting rehabilitation, and carrying out its correctional responsibilities.

Further, the Commissioner of Prisons position was created through the restructuring of the former Assistant and Deputy Commissioner ranks, while the Assistant Superintendent serves as an intermediary rank.
The inspectorate level consists of the Chief Inspector of Prisons and Inspector of Prisons. The Inspector rank was separated from the senior sergeant category to establish it as an independent rank.
Below the inspectorate are the Senior Sergeant, Sergeant and Corporal ranks. At the entry level are Prison Constables, commonly known as warders, who form the foundation of the correctional service.
KPS keeps offenders in safe, secure custody while supporting their rehabilitation and reintegration into society.
Its duties include providing inmates with training and counselling to support behaviour change and rehabilitation.
