Americans have been reacting with deep sadness after the wife of one of six U.S. service members killed in a military plane crash in Iraq shared an emotional goodbye message online.
Major Alex “Alex” Klinner, a 36‑year‑old Alabama native, was among the six crew members aboard a KC‑135 Stratotanker that crashed on March 12 while supporting operations in western Iraq. The cause of the crash is still under investigation, and U.S. military officials have said there was no indication of hostile fire involved.
Klinner was a father of three young children and is remembered by friends, family, and community members as a devoted family man with a joyful spirit.
A Family’s Loss
Hours after the announcement of the crash, Klinner’s wife, Libby Klinner, posted a message on Instagram that quickly drew widespread attention.

“In March 12, our world shattered,” Libby wrote. “Alex and his crew were on the plane that crashed in Iraq. I’m devastated to lose the best person I know, the person who made everything more fun, my best friend.”
In her post, Libby described what it will mean for their children, two‑and‑a‑half‑year‑old and seven‑month‑old twins, to grow up without their father.
“They won’t get to see firsthand the way he would jump up to help in any way he could,” she wrote. “They won’t see how goofy and funny he was. They won’t witness his selflessness, the way he thought about everyone else before himself. They won’t get to feel the deep love he had for them.”
The message continues with Libby admitting that the loss “still doesn’t feel real” and that she finds herself expecting a text from him a reflection of how close the couple was.
“We just moved to a new home and we had so many exciting plans in the next few years,” she wrote. “Now we are left to navigate the void left in our hearts.”
Libby also thanked friends, family and strangers alike for the outpouring of support, noting that the kind words and gestures have meant more than she can express. Alongside her post, she shared some of the last photos she and Alex had together before his deployment.

A GoFundMe page has been shared. It was launched by Klinner’s sister‑in‑law to help the family with immediate needs.
Community and National Reactions
Across social media and public forums, people have expressed sympathy for the Klinner family and the families of the other five service members who died in the crash. Many messages have focused on honoring the service and sacrifice of the fallen airmen.
Former members of Congress and public figures have also commented. For example, a former congresswoman Marjorie Greene, said, “Devastating. I’m so sorry for his wife and children. I’m sorry for all the families that lost their military loved one. Praying for you all.”
Others emphasized the emotional impact on the broader community, noting how young Klinner’s children were and how sudden the loss was for his family.
