Colleges Offering Special Needs Education Courses and Their Fees

Students pursuing a course in Special Needs Education (SNE) are contributing to the education and empowerment of learners with disabilities in a fulfilling way.

Several colleges offer specialized programs that prepare individuals to work with learners who have various learning disabilities, sensory impairments, and physical challenges.

These institutions not only equip students with teaching strategies but also with an understanding of the legal, psychological, and social aspects of special education.

The fees for special needs education courses vary depending on the institution, program level, and whether the student is a Kenyan resident or an international student.

Minimum KCSE Grade Requirement to Enroll on Diploma in SNE

For one to enroll in a diploma course in SNE, he/she must have a minimum grade of C Plain in KCSE or its equivalent.

Additionally, the candidate must have at least a C- (minus) in English, a C- (minus) in Mathematics for science-based courses, and a D (plain) in Mathematics for non-science-based courses.

Diploma in SNE consists of courses on Autism, Emotional & Behavioural Difficulties, Hearing Impairment, Deafblind, and Intellectual Disabilities.

Others include Gifted and Talented Education, Visual Impairment, Physical Disabilities, Learning Disabilities, and Inclusive Education.

Kenya Institute of Special Education (KISE) is a semi-autonomous government agency of the Ministry of Education, Kenya.

It was established through a Legal Notice No. 17 of 14th February 1986. A specialized institution that offers a Diploma in Special Needs Education.

KISE is one of the top institutions that conduct teacher training courses for teachers in various fields of education of children with special needs and disabilities.

Diploma courses in SNE at KISE take a period of two years.

The first year consists of sessions 1, 2, and 3, while the second year consists of sessions 4 and 5.

The total fees for the first year are Ksh 96,475, while for the second year, the fees are Ksh 40,425. 

Requirements for Diploma in Special Needs Education at KISE

  • An applicant can be a holder of P1 Primary Teacher Certificate by training or its equivalent with a minimum of 2 years teaching experience or
  • Holders of Certificate Course in Early Childhood Education Development (ECDE) from a government Institutions with at least D+ in KCSE or Division II in KCE or its equivalent and at least 2 years teaching experience.
  • They can also be holders of P1 teacher certificate through promotion after passing PTC exam offered by the Directorate of Quality Assurance and Standards, Ministry of Education, Kenya or
  • Holders of P2 Teacher certificate and certificate in SNE from KISE or any other recognized institution with at least a D plain in KCSE or Division IV in KCE or its equivalent and at least 5 years teaching experience.

Other colleges offering a Diploma in SNE include St. Lawrence Egoji Teachers College in Egoji, Prudential International School of Professional Studies in Nakuru, and Kenya ECDE Teachers Training College in Rongai.

Additionally, Maasai Teacher College in Nairobi, Special Education and Professional Studies College in Nairobi, and Nyanchwa Teachers Training College in Kisii also offer specialized training in SNE.
