The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) on August 9 honored Dr. Margaret Awino Ong’ale a distinguished officer.
The officer has reached two major milestones, earned a PhD and launched her new book Transforming the Law Enforcers, a bold call for ethical policing and reform.
A ceremony held at Weston Hotel in Nairobi drew family, friends and colleagues who gathered to celebrate Ong’ale’s achievements.
The event recognized the academic success, a broader commitment to reform and leadership within Kenya’s law enforcement community.
Ong’ale, a long-serving DCI officer, now joins the growing ranks of women in uniform who are pushing boundaries in policing, education and leadership.

Her book shows a vision for transforming law enforcement through ethical leadership, policy reform and justice-centered approaches.

In her book, Ong’ale presents what has been described as a bold and practical roadmap for improving police operations and strengthening public trust in law enforcement.

Her story has been hailed as a symbol of resilience and the power of education to inspire institutional change.
Transforming the Law Enforcers is available now and is expected to serve as a resource for policymakers, law enforcement leaders and scholars working to build a more accountable policing system in Kenya.
Success in Her Career
Dr Margaret Awino Ong’ale is a respected law enforcement professional and security expert with over 16 years of experience in Kenya’s Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI).
She currently serves as the Sub-County Criminal Investigations Officer (SCCIO), where she plays a key role in managing investigations, promoting ethical policing, and strengthening institutional accountability.
Dr Ong’ale holds a PhD in Law Enforcement and Justice Administration, a Master’s degree and a First-Class Honours bachelor’s degree in security management and Police Studies.
She also holds a Postgraduate Diploma in Forensic Science, a Diploma in Crime Management and Prevention, and is a Certified Fraud Examiner (CFE).
Her research interests lie in police reform, criminal investigations, forensic science, and justice sector governance.
Her latest work, Police Institutional Reforms and Performance of Law Enforcement Agencies: A Case of the Directorate of Criminal Investigations, Kenya, explores how institutional reforms impact performance, professionalism, and public trust in law enforcement.

When not in the field or conducting research, Dr Ong’ale actively mentors young officers and contributes to policy discussions on security and justice reform in Kenya and the wider East African region.
