Eric Latiff Lands Another Job After Quitting Standard Group

Seasoned journalist Eric Latiff has landed another job hours after he announced his exit from the troubled Standard Group.

Latiff, who has nearly three decades of experience, has joined NTV, owned by the Nation Media Group – NMG.

In a statement, NMG’s Head of Broadcasting Simaloi Dajom said Latiff had joined the Kimathi Street based giant on January 6.

In his welcome message, Dajom acknowledged Latiff’s vast experience across the media.

“Latiff is a highly regarded and accomplished media personality, renowned for his creativity, passion, and a stellar track record across TV, Radio, and Digital platforms.

With over 27 years of experience in the media industry, Latiff brings a wealth of knowledge and a passion for developing new media,” noted Dajom.

He added, “Having Latiff on board aligns perfectly with our strategy to continuously innovate and elevate our broadcast offerings and underscores our commitment to creating multimedia content that our customers love.

I am confident that his inclusion will bring much needed impact in the fast-changing media landscape.”

However, NMG did not disclose Latiff’s role at Twin Towers.

“Let’s extend a warm NMG welcome to Eric Latiff and support him as he settles in. Stay tuned to NTV and Nation Media Groups’ digital platforms for more details.”

NTV anchor James Smart was quick to welcome Latiff to the station, recalling their days at 98.4 Capital FM.

“Welcome to the team Eric Latiff from our Capital FM days. Let’s get into some good trouble.”

Several journalists including CNN’s Victoria Rubadiri, Joy Muthengi and Laura Walubengo honed their skills at Lonrho House, during the days of the late DJ CK – Chris Kirubi.

Until his resignation from the Daniel Moi-owned listed company, Latiff was a show host, and was loved for his interviewing skills on The Situation Room on Spice FM.

He co-hosted the show with CT Muga and Ndu Okoh.

In his exit message, he recounted the five years at Spice FM, thanking the fans for their support.

“On this 6th day of January 2025, my heart is heavy as I bid kwaheri to the brilliant team of colleagues at Spice FM and the Standard Group. I am grateful for the opportunity to once again be a part of Kenya’s oldest private media house and I am proud of the teams that I leave behind in radio, TV and print,” part of Latiff’s statement read.

Trouble at Standard Group

Latiff joined a long list of top journalists who were either forced out of the Standard Group or chose to leave as the firm struggles to remain afloat.

In the past couple of years, SG has witnessed unprecedented talent hemorrhage with its competitors like Royal Media Services that owns Citizen TV and NMG turning it into a poaching ground.

Massive losses, harsh economic times and poor management have pushed the Standard Group to the edge.

Before Latiff’s departure, the Editor-in-Chief Ochieng Rapuro left the company unceremoniously.

The Standard Group is also grappling with salary arrears and has been unable to pay its former staff who either resigned voluntarily or were declared redundant.

So dire has been the situation that former employees held protests at the company’s headquarters along Mombasa Road.

The Kenya Times understands that most of the affected former workers are yet to receive their dues.

At the same time, the former staff lost all their savings in the Network SACCO.
