The Kenya Institute of Highways and Building Technology (KIHBT) under the State Departments for Roads in the Ministry of Roads and Transport has announced scholarship opportunities for Road and Highway Courses.
The institute noted that the scholarship was strictly for vulnerable female students interested in pursuing the courses provided.
“Only females who meet the stated requirements and from vulnerable backgrounds may apply for the scholarship,” the advertisement read in part.
According to the institution, the reason for offering scholarships to female students is to bridge the gender gap in the industry.
“The Institute, through the East Africa Skills for Transformation and Regional Integration Project (EASTRIP), aims to reduce the gender disparity among students in the long-term project-specific courses (Diploma in Highway Engineering and Craft Certificate in Road Construction),” the institute noted.
In a statement, the institute noted that applicants should be willing to learn and possess an aptitude towards a technical career.

Notably, partial scholarships (covering tuition and accommodation) will be offered to Qualifying Kenyan female persons aged 27 and below, from vulnerable backgrounds.
Eligibility for the Scholarship
Additionally, KIBHT highlighted qualifications required to warrant eligibility for the scholarship including the minimum academic requirements.
For Diploma in Highway Engineering, one should have KCSE Minimum Mean Grade of C- (minus) with at least C (minus) in English Language, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry or Technical subjects.
Similarly, for Craft Certificate in Road Construction, the applicant should have a KCSE Minimum Mean Grade of D (plain) with at least D (plain) in English Language, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry or Technical subjects.
How to Apply
- Complete the scholarship application form and declaration page available on the KIHBT website.
- Submit a handwritten justification of not more than three hundred (300) words indicating why you deserve the training and the scholarship.
- Provide a stamped and signed letter of recommendation from the area chief
- Further, applicants should submit copies of their National Identity Card, Birth Certificate, Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) Certificate, other academic certificates, and supporting documents such as letters of recommendation.
Note that the completed application form and declaration page, together with the other attachments, should be submitted in a sealed envelope addressed to the Director, Kenya Institute of Highways & Building Technology, Commercial Street, P.O. Bax 57511- 00200, Nairobi.

Consequently, this should be submitted by post or hand-delivered to the registry, KIHBT main campus located along commercial street, Nairobi on or before 30 November 2023.
The institution has called on persons with disabilities who meet the minimum qualifications to apply.
However, they warned against giving false information, submitting late applications and canvassing as that would lead to automatic disqualification.
