The Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) has issued a 14-day notice to owners of idle, long-stay containers and vehicles within the Port of Mombasa.
In an announcement made by Capt. William K. Ruto, the Managing Director of the KPA, pointed out that the clean-up drive aims to ease congestion and maximize the utilization of available spaces within the port premises.

KPA Evacuation Orders
The notice, Tuesday, April 23, 2024, mandates owners of privately owned idle equipment, stalled vehicles, tools, and long-stay empty containers to arrange for their evacuation from the port premises by the close of business on the 7th of May 2024.
Following a recent equipment survey conducted within the port premises, it has come to light that a number of privately owned idle equipment, stalled vehicles, tools, and long-stay empty containers are occupying space within the port premises and in sick bays.

“Owners are hereby notified and required to make arrangements for their evacuation from the Port premises within 14 days from the date of this Notice, i.e. by close of business on 7th May 2024,” stated Capt. William K. Ruto.
Importantly, owners are reminded of their obligation to settle all outstanding charges owed to the Port Authority prior to the evacuation of their items.

“Please note that in the event of your failure to comply with this Notice, the Ports Authority will dispose of the equipment, long-stay containers, and any of the aforementioned items in accordance with the Kenya Ports Authority Act,” said Capt. Ruto.
Consequences of noncompliance
Moreover, according to the announcement made by KPA, failure to comply with this directive will result in the Ports Authority taking decisive action.
“The Ports Authority will dispose of the equipment, long-stay containers, and any of the aforementioned items in accordance with the Kenya Ports Authority Act to defray any charges due in their respect, without any further reference to the owners,” he stated.
In response to queries regarding the rationale behind the clean-up initiative, Capt. Ruto highlighted the mission of enhancing operational efficiency and safety within the port environment.
“We are committed to maintaining a conducive and organized workspace that facilitates seamless service delivery to stakeholders,” stated Capt. Ruto.

The clean-up campaign is expected to yield several benefits, including the optimization of yard spaces, which according to KPA will enable more efficient cargo handling operations.
Consequently, the removal of idle equipment and long-stay containers will mitigate the risk of congestion and streamline port activities.
