The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has announced that it will begin absorbing all 46,000 interns across the country by January 2024.
Speaking on Tuesday, November 7, the commission stated that the interns will be employed under permanent and pensionable terms.
Further, TSC Director of staffing Antonina Lentoijoni stated that after every two years, the commission will be employing intern teachers serving in various institutions across the country.
At the same time, the commission stated that all intern teachers with pending salaries will receive their whole amount in December 2023.

TSC Specifies Interns Who will be Absorbed
Furthermore, TSC explained that although all the intern teachers will be absorbed by the commission, it will be done in stages.
It noted that those who began their internships in February 2023 would be given priority while those who began their internship in September 2023, will follow going all the way to 2025.
Also, some of the interns will receive an extension of their internship contract for an additional one year before they are fully absorbed in 2025.
“There are two sets of interns, there are those who started working in February 2023 and those who began in September 2023, so the ones we are talking about are those who started in February.
“Some will receive an extension of their contract for another one year. Our internship policy provides for an extension for the contract because teaching and learning requires continuity,” added the commission.
TSC on Contract with Minet Medical Cover
On the other hand, the commission raised questions over the medical provider Minet that was in a contractual agreement with the commission.
According to the commission, there had been so many questions and concerns over Minet, yet the commission continued to extend their contract with the said organization.
Further, TSC was put on the spot to explain if its officers were benefiting from the deal and why they insisted on working with Minet.

“This commission should give TSC a single coin to go to Minet because it is not the first time, we have raised the issue here, but TSC has always found a way of trying to make things look like they are okay,” questioned the committee.
In addition, the committee stated that it would not approve any supplementary budget if the commission renewed or prolonged its partnership with Minet.
However, TSC Director of legal services Clavin Anyuor defended the commission stating that the matter was complicated and required more time to address.
“The issue of Minet is complicated. Let us set aside a day and discuss it so that we can explain the problem that we also have so that there is no insinuation that TSC and Minet are in collusion. We are not,” he stated.
