The First Lady Rachel Ruto seeks to launch a countrywide kitchen garden project intended to promote food security across the country, following a successful pilot program.
Dubbed ‘Mama Kitchen Gardens’, the initiative is targeted at women and seeks to inspire them to cultivate kitchen gardens near their homes.
The project is under the State Department of Agriculture and is termed as a national food-growing initiative geared towards promoting food security in the country.
There is a successful pilot farm at State House, Nairobi, that showcases the progress of the initiative being spearheaded by the first lady.
Furthermore, apart from the Mama Kitchen Garden in State House Nairobi, the initiative will be established in all state lodges across the country to propel its benefits in various regions.
On implementation, the Ministry of Agriculture and county governments will oversee the rollout of the initiative, which aims to support food security efforts in the country.
Other Targeted Locations in ‘Mama Kitchen Garden’ Initiative
Apart from women growing kitchen gardens at their homes and state lodges doing the same, the project seeks to see gardens grown in schools as part of the competency-based curriculum (CBC) in learning institutions.
In a statement, the First Lady explained that the initiative seeks to enhance nutrition in homes across the county.
“The Mama Kitchen Garden initiative aims to motivate women across the country to establish kitchen gardens. By cultivating fruits and vegetables at the household level, these gardens support balanced diets and food and nutritional security,” she stated.
