The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has issued a statement regarding the attack and subsequent death of Aisha Akinyi Abubakar, Acting County Elections Manager, Kilifi.
In a statement, IEBC CEO Marjan Hussein Marjan said Aisha was murdered on the night of 4th January 2025 at her house in Utange, Kisauni Constituency, Mombasa County.
She was attacked alongside her son who sustained serious injuries and is currently receiving attention and treatment.
Marjan said the Commission is saddened by her death and expressed deepest condolences to Aisha’s family, friends and colleagues for the tragic loss.
“The IEBC assures the family and friends that it will journey with them during this period of profound sorrow,” Marjan said.
IEBC Calls for Action
Further, he said IEBC is deeply concerned by the incident and condemns the perpetrators behind Aisha’s death.
He called on the country’s security agencies to speedily investigate this heinous occurrence and apprehend her killers.
Aisha joined the Commission in 2012 as a Constituency Elections Coordinator for Nyali and was first deployed to Kilifi South.
She has diligently served the Commission and risen through the ranks to the position of Acting County Elections Manager – Kilifi.
IEBC mourned her as was a well-trained officer who performed all her duties with utmost honesty, integrity and dedication.

Aisha Attack & Death
According to police reports, Aisha was attacked by masked robbers at 3:00 am on January 5, 2025.
Police said the robbers into her house through the kitchen window, also attacked Aisha’s 18-year-old son, Khasim Hassan.
“They gained access to the house by cutting the grills of the kitchen window while armed with crowbar and knife,” the police report read in part.
One suspect, wearing a mask, reportedly cut Aisha on the head above her right eye and used a knife to wound Khasim’s head.

They then stole a Samsung A15 mobile phone, a 65-inch Samsung TV, a sound system, an iPad, and a Samsung A21.
Khasim rushed her mother to Premier Hospital, where doctors pronounced her dead-on arrival.
“The son was treated and is yet to be discharged. He is in a stable condition,” added the police.
Police said they are pursuing various leads into the attack.
