Kenyan universities, led by Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT), represented Kenya at the 2024–2025 Huawei Global ICT Competition Global Finals, held in Shenzhen, China.
The annual event attracted over 210,000 students from more than 2,000 universities across 100 countries.
Teams of ICT students from JKUAT, Machakos University, Moi University, the University of Nairobi, and Egerton University brought pride to Kenya by winning awards in several competitive categories. The event was held in Shenzhen, China.
JKUAT and Other Kenya’s Winning Teams
- First Prize – Computing Track
A combined team from JKUAT and Machakos University clinched the top prize in this category. The team included Esther Guichaiya and Ephraim Shikanga (JKUAT), along with Mark Omaiko and Ian Omwenga (Machakos University). - Second Prize – Cloud Track
An all-female team from Moi University and JKUAT won second place. The team featured Ifrah Hussein and Beverly Ndombi (Moi University) and Banzy (JKUAT). - Second Prize – Network Track
Another collaborative effort between JKUAT, Machakos University, and the University of Nairobi secured the second prize in this category. Team members included Rukia Mwari Mohammed (JKUAT), Brian Kipkoech (Machakos University), and Odanga Clemet (University of Nairobi). - Third Prize – Innovation Track
Egerton University’s “Silicon Savannah” team was awarded third place for developing a Smart Air Quality Monitoring System. The team comprised instructor Patricia Gitonga (University of Nairobi), and students Karimi Muriithi, Denis Syengo, and Peterson Kariuki (Egerton University).
Kenyan Delegation Present at the Ceremony
The awards ceremony was attended by a high-level Kenyan delegation, which included: Fikirini Jacobs, Principal Secretary of the State Department for Youth Affairs and Creative Economy; Willy Bett, the Kenyan Ambassador to China; and representatives from Huawei Kenya, Khadija Mohammed (Media Director) and Lutta Yeng.
Other members of the Kenyan delegation included Albert Ombiro, Kenya’s Education Attaché to China; Philip Oyier and Wairimu Gichaiya from JKUAT; Miss Patricia Gitonga from the University of Nairobi; and Franklin Mutisya from Machakos University.

Speaking during the awards ceremony, PS Fikirini Jacobs commended Huawei and celebrated Team Kenya’s success.
“Thank you, Huawei, for the opportunity, and congratulations to Team Kenya—both lecturers and students—for the resounding victory. May you continue to explore and nurture your expertise for the betterment of our beloved country. More grace to you, comrades and friends,” said Fikirini.
About the Huawei ICT Competition
Now in its 10th edition, the Huawei ICT Competition is one of the world’s largest tech competitions for university students. Since 2015, it has provided a platform for over 960,000 students from more than 2,000 institutions across 100 countries to improve their ICT knowledge, practical skills, and innovation capacity.
The 2024–2025 edition was the largest to date, with 179 teams from 48 countries competing in the Global Finals. Competition tracks included Cloud, Network, Computing, and Innovation.

The event is recognized as a flagship program by UNESCO’s Global Skills Academy and aligns with Huawei’s broader mission to accelerate digital transformation in education.
