Suna East Constituency Member of Parliament (MP) Junet Mohamed has defended his participation in Harambees and empowerment drives, explaining that the millions he contributes to community initiatives come from his friends and his own business ventures.
In an interview on August 11, Junet responded to questions over the source of funds donated at Harambees after Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) politicians were accused of adopting a practice the party had previously criticized among Kenya Kwanza politicians.
Junet revealed that he has friends who are businessmen and professionals who can contribute to his fundraising initiatives.
“My friends are businessmen; they are professionals in their lives. I have friends who can contribute to me, really, and I can afford three billion myself. I was also a businessman. I can get three million from my businesses,” Junet said in the interview on Citizen TV.
Junet Defends His Harambees Amid Questions Over Funding
Junet further defended his decision to support women seeking financial assistance to grow their businesses, saying he had a responsibility to help constituents who elected him.
He said he would continue organizing Harambees and would involve friends, other leaders and members of society to raise funds for community projects.
Junet also revealed plans to organize another Harambee aimed at supporting young people, following the initiative targeting women in Migori.
“They elected me three times in Parliament or four times. I can’t even remember. You want to tell me I show them my back? No, I will organize friends. I will organize other leaders. I will organize the society so that we can come together and contribute to the people. That is what is called donation. That’s what’s called Harambe, and that’s exactly what I did. And I’m going to do it again for youths now. That was for women. I’m planning one for youth,” he added.
The MP maintained that ODM has never opposed Harambees conducted to empower communities, arguing that the party’s concern in the past was about fundraising activities where the source of money could not be accounted for.

Donation of Ksh10 Million During Harambee
The Suna East legislator contributed KSh10 million at an ODM women’s empowerment fundraiser in Nyabisawa, Migori County on June 27, 2026.
He said KSh3 million came from his own money, while KSh7 million was contributed by his friends.
The wider fundraiser brought together several ODM leaders who raised more than KSh35 million to support women-led businesses in the region.
On July 1, Treasury Cabinet Secretary John Mbadi defended Junet Mohamed following public scrutiny over his KSh10 million contribution at a local fundraising event.

Mbadi described the donation as a private act of philanthropy, backed by Junet’s business interests and personal financial capacity.
He dismissed suggestions that the money could be linked to state-sanctioned corruption or unexplained wealth, pointing to Junet’s long history in the private sector before and during his tenure in Parliament.
Mbadi noted that Junet has business interests in the oil and transport sectors, arguing that a politician’s financial capacity should not be assessed solely based on their government salary.
He maintained that politicians can have legitimate sources of income outside their official earnings, including private businesses and investments.
