Kalonzo’s Insider Spills the Beans on Deal with Gachagua to Counter Ruto’s Re-election

Wiper Democratic Movement Party Deputy Secretary-General Dan Maanzo has revealed that their party leader Kalonzo Musyoka will form a coalition with former deputy president (DP) Rigathi Gachagua.

In a TV interview on January 9, Maanzo said the two leaders are working together to create a big alliance aimed to unseat President William Ruto in 2027.

“Wiper will form an alliance with Gachagua. The alliance will be a big one which will get 50 per cent plus 1 vote in the first round,” Maanzo said.

However, the Makueni Senator clarified that Wiper remains part of the Azimio Coalition alongside Raila Odinga’s ODM party.

In his submissions, Maanzo defended Raila’s decision to cooperate with the Kenya Kwanza government, stating that it prevented the country from descending into lawlessness.

He stated that Raila was trying to prevent escalation of the crisis to ensure the country moves through to 2027.

“ODM decided to save the country when Ruto was overran through Parliament and was about to be overran in the State House. If people storm State House, you run away to another country or seek refuge elsewhere. Therefore, it means that we are left stateless and probably the army will take over the country,” Ruto said.

Why Kalonzo Stands a Chance

According to the Senator, Ruto’s government failed when protesters overran Parliament on June 25, 2024.

He said Kenyans are unhappy with Ruto’s unkept promises, corruption and stalled project and they are losing every hope with him.

Raila 2027 Effect

Maanzo said the president has lost control of the Mt. Kenya vote rich region after Gachagua’s impeachment.

He also stated that Ruto’s reelection depends entirely on Raila’s support.

“Ruto has lost the Mountain and if Raila doesn’t support him he will have very bad numbers in 2027. His government is hanging on Raila’s lips. If I were him, I would not run in the next election,” he said.

Sifuna Dismisses ODM-UDA Coalition Claims

Speaking in the same interview, ODM Secretary General Edwin Sifuna dismissed reports that the party will back Ruto in the next election,

Sifuna said ODM has not given up the quest to acquire power otherwise they would have folded the party already.

“There is no agreement between ODM and UDA about 2027,” Sifuna said.

He explained that political parties exist for the sole purpose of winning power through democratic means.

Sifuna said Ruto would still lose the election even with ODM’s support if he doesn’t address issues raised by the people.

“If you are unpopular, it doesn’t matter how many leaders you bring around you. We will lose the elections with Ruto even if we support him because the people are clear in their minds on what a government is supposed to do. For as long as you are not addressing these issues, it doesn’t matter,” he added.
