National carrier Kenya Airways (KQ) issued a public notice to motorists and road users regarding the transportation of an extra-long abnormal load on Sunday, January 12, 2024.
In the notice, Kenya Airways stated that the load will be transported from Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA), via the Eastern Bypass and Thika Road, to Mang’u.
“Special care is required before overtaking. To all road users, please exercise extra care and caution when approaching this convoy. Let’s ensure a safe journey for everyone!” the airline said.
The transportation involves relocating a decommissioned Boeing 737-700 aircraft to Mang’u High School as part of efforts to inspire students to pursue careers in aviation.

KQ donated the plane, registered as 5Y-KQH and built in May 2003, to Mang’u High School in September 2023.
The aircraft, which was delivered new to Kenya Airways, retired in October 2019 after completing over 20,900 flights and accumulating more than 56,800 flight hours.

Kenya Airways CEO Allan Kilavuka stated that the aircraft will enhance aviation learning at Mang’u.
“This donation is true to our commitment to nurturing talent and driving economic growth, not only in Kenya but also across the broader African continent. We eagerly anticipate witnessing the profound impact this initiative will have on Mang’u High School,” Kilavuka said.
Kilavuka said the airline will also offer technical support to the school, said they have started discussions with universities particularly TUK and Kenyatta University (KU) on matters aviation.
“This is to make sure that we are impacting influence in their curriculum to be relevant to us and meet current industry demands,” he said.

Former Transport CS Kipchumba Murkomen commended the initiative, noting that it aligns with the government’s agenda of involving youth and MSMEs in creating solutions to current challenges, fostering innovation, and supporting efforts to combat climate change while providing economic opportunities.
Murkomen thanked Kenya Airways for its dedication to talent development through initiatives such as the donation to Mang’u High School, its aviation innovation hub (Fahari Innovation Hub), and its aviation training school (the Pride Centre).

“The donation affirms KQ’s support for the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC), which emphasizes harnessing students’ interests, developing their talents, converting their passions into careers, and transforming theoretical knowledge into practical applications,” Murkomen said.
He stated that the initiative underscores the importance of Public-Private Partnerships (PPP) in advancing the government’s education and aviation reforms and ensuring that our young people have access to the requisite tools and opportunities necessary for the creation of successful careers.
