The National Defence University-Kenya has announced new PhD programs as well as master’s programs to be offered at the University.
In a notice dated November 22, 2024, the University named two PhD courses and eight master’s Courses that it intends to launch soon. The PhD programs include PhD in National Security and Strategy and PhD in Crisis and Disaster Management.
The University also plans to offer several master’s courses that include a Master of Arts in Defence and Strategic Studies, a Master of Arts in Gender and Peace Support Studies and a Master of Arts in Military Intelligence.
It will also offer a master’s degree in science in Defence Intelligence, Master of Science in Information Technology for Defence Sciences, Master of Science in Weapon Engineering, Master of Science in Aeronautical Engineering, and MSc in Tax Forensics and National Security.
National Defence University-Kenya’s second graduation
The announcement comes as the University holds its second graduation ceremony on Friday November 22, 2024. The event was presided over by President Willliam Ruto who also doubles up as the Chancellor.
In his speech president Ruto affirmed the importance of security in fostering economic growth.
“Defense goes beyond safeguarding borders to encompass strategies for understanding and managing the multifaceted drivers of insecurity. Security therefore must involve fostering stability, economic growth and the partnership required to address global challenges effectively,” said President Ruto.

He also talked about femicide, urging stakeholders in the society to take charge in bringing up a morally upright citizenry.
“What is the place of parents, family, society and religion in bringing up a morally upright, right patriotic citizenry? So that we can better understand the breakdown that leads to young people committing femicide,” noted President Ruto.
In attendance was also the Defence Cabinet Secretary, Soipan Tuya. While commending the graduands, Tuya acknowledged the role of the University in shaping leaders and policy developers.

Other courses offered at the university include Postgraduate Diploma in National Security and Strategy, Diploma in National Security and Strategy, Master of Arts in Crisis Response and Disaster Management and Bachelor of Science in Defence and Security Studies.
The University also offers Bachelor of Science in Nursing with Military Health, Higher Diploma in Clinical Medicine and Surgery (Anesthesia), Higher Diploma in Perioperative Nursing, Higher Diploma in Critical Care Nursing, and Diploma in Kenya Registered Community Health Nursing.
University’s Leadership
The National Defence University-Kenya was awarded a Charter on May 27, 2021, with an aim of creating an enabling environment for seamless integration of theory and practice in defence, and security education.
It was inaugurated on August 3, 2022, in an event presided over by the former President Uhuru Kenyatta, who also became the first Chancellor of the University.
President William Samoei Ruto is at the helm of the university’s leadership as the current Chancellor. Lt Gen Jimson L Mutai is the Vice-Chancellor, while the Chief of Defence Forces, General Charles Kahariri is the Chairperson of the National Defence University-Kenya Council.
