The Kenya Meteorological Department (KMD) has issued a rainfall alert for residents of Nairobi. The Kenya Met alert comes after heavy rains were reported in various parts of the country.
This week, Nairobi and its surrounding areas experienced significant rainfall, causing some roads within the city to become impassable. According to the Meteorological Department, Nairobi residents can expect moderate to heavy rainfall, with some areas potentially experiencing very heavy rainfall (over 50mm) and isolated storms.
Rainfall is also anticipated in the Southeastern Lowlands, Western Kenya, Rift Valley, Lake Victoria Basin, and Central Highlands. The KMD has urged residents to remain vigilant due to the possibility of disruptions.
“Stay prepared. Be weather-aware and ready for potential disruptions,” said KMD.
Kenya Met releases 5-day weather outlook
The alert comes after Kenya Met released a five-day weather forecast for the period starting January 30 to February 3, 2025.
According to the forecast, rainfall is expected to continue over the Highlands West of the Rift Valley, and the Lake Victoria Basin including the Rift Valley during the period.
The Highlands West of the Rift Valley covers the counties of Siaya, Kisumu, Homabay, Migori, Kisii, Nyamira, Trans Nzoia, Baringo, Uasin Gishu, Elgeyo-Marakwet, Nandi, Nakuru, Narok, Kericho, Bomet, Kakamega, Vihiga, Bungoma, Busia and West Pokot.

Residents in these regions will experience minimum temperatures of up to 10°C and a maximum of 31°C.
According to the forecast, morning rains are expected over few places in these regions. Afternoon showers and thunderstorms are likely to occur over few places in all days while showers will be experienced at night.
Areas within in the Southeastern lowlands, which include Machakos, Kitui, Makueni, Kajiado, Taita-Taveta and Tana River Counties are also set to experience rainfall.
Kenya Met said that morning rains as well as afternoon and night showers and thunderstorms are expected over few places during the first half of the forecast period within these regions.
Weather Forecast in the Coast Region
Elsewhere in the Coast region which includes areas within the coastal counties of Mombasa, Kilifi, Lamu and Kwale Counties as well as the coastal parts of Tana River County, sunny intervals are expected during the day while nights are likely to be partly cloudy.
However, morning and afternoon showers may occur over a few areas in the South Coast during the first half of the forecast period.
High daytime temperatures of about 35°C, on the other hand are expected, in the coastal counties with minimum temperatures of 22°C.

In the northwestern Kenya region, which includes Turkana and Samburu counties, sunny intervals are expected during the day, while nights are likely to be partly cloudy.
However, morning rains, as well as afternoon and night showers and thunderstorms, may occur in a few places during the first half of the forecast period.
The KMD alert comes after the department predicted that the long rain season that normally runs from March to May will begin in February in some parts of the country.
Kenya Met Director General Dr David Gikungu said on Wednesday that the season in most parts would run between February and June.
The announcement stated that some parts will receive high and others low rainfall.
Long rains
The Lake Victoria Basin and the Highlands West of the Rift Valley are expected to experience above-average rainfall starting in February with the peak expected to be in April and May for most areas.
“The MAM 2025 forecast indicates that near to above-average rainfall is expected over the Lake Victoria Basin, South Rift Valley, most of the Highlands West of the Rift Valley, the southern parts of the Southeastern lowlands and the extreme northern parts of northwestern Kenya,” Met Department stated.
The weatherman, at the same time, predicted that counties in the highlands East of the Rift Valley and Nairobi County would begin experiencing rains between the fourth week of March and April.
Some of the affected counties are Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Murang’a, Embu, Meru, Kiambu, Nyandarua, Nairobi Counties and eastern parts of Laikipia County.
The Met department has also urged the public to consider the outlook of a 24-hour, 5-day, 7-day, monthly forecast for a more detailed weather change.
