Meanwhile, Inspector General (IG) of Police Douglas Kanja ordered gun owners in 14 areas in Tana River County to surrender their firearms to the nearest police station.

“In exercise of powers under Section 106 (2)(a) of the National Police Service Act, 2011, the Inspector-General of the National Police Service has prohibited the possession of arms in specified parts of Tana River County,” read part of the notice.

This follows a declaration by the Cabinet Secretary for Interior and National Administration on October 11, 2024, marking these areas as security-disturbed and dangerous for a period of 30 days.”

The affected areas include Bangale Sub-County, Madogo Location, Areri Location, Saka Location, Sala Location, Mororo Location, Mlulambala Location, Tana North Sub-County, Hirimani Location, Hosingo Location, Dukanotu Location, Chewele Location, Nanighi Location, and Bura Location.

People Killed in Inter-clan Clashes in Tana River

The directives come after more than 18 people were killed in ongoing clashes in Tana River County in the violence that began nearly a week ago in the Anole area and has since spread to other villages, including Nanighi.

At least six more people were killed in the new inter-clan fighting in Matagala area.

Hundreds of residents from these villages have fled their homes in search of safety and refuge. Many are nursing injuries, with some fighting for their lives in various hospitals. The escalating conflict has created a humanitarian crisis, prompting calls for intervention and assistance for the affected communities.

It is believed that the conflict started after the Tana River County government offered land to resettle flood victims who had been living along the banks of Tana River.

Four politicians on September 30 were given an ultimatum to appear before the National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC) over ongoing investigations regarding procedures related to the fighting between communities.
