Deputy President Kithure Kindiki has shared details of private meetings with his predecessor, Rigathi Gachagua, including late-night ones, saying he warned him to remain loyal to President William Ruto before his eventual impeachment.
Speaking on Saturday, August 15, at a meeting with Mount Kenya East leaders, Kindiki said he repeatedly tried to advise Gachagua during his time as the Interior Cabinet Secretary.
Kindiki said he visited Gachagua several times at night when he was still the Interior Cabinet Secretary to offer him advice on his relationship with President Ruto.
He claimed, however, that Gachagua dismissed his advice and looked down on him, only to later find himself out of office.
“I came to visit you many nights when I was the Interior Cabinet Secretary and told you to be loyal to the President so that in the future you could also be in his position,” Kindiki said.
“But you despised me and told me I don’t know what I was saying. Now you are making noise from the outside.”
Kindiki Reveals How He Tried to Save Gachagua
Kindiki said Gachagua’s removal from office was the result of what he described as overconfidence, insisting that he had warned him before things turned against him.
The Deputy President said he had tried to help Gachagua avoid removal from office but warned that he would not disclose further details unless pushed.
“Your overconfidence is what removed you from office, and I had told you. I do not want to be like you. Do not push me to expose the secret of how I tried to help you,” Kindiki said.
The Deputy President accused Gachagua of disrespecting him and warned him not to underestimate his political experience.
“You are not God, so stop looking down on me,” Kindiki said.
He argued that political leadership was temporary and that every leader should use their time in office responsibly.
Kindiki said Gachagua had been given an opportunity to serve as Deputy President but failed to make proper use of it.

Attack Over 2027 Political Plans
Kindiki also took issue with Gachagua’s political activities and his association with leaders positioning themselves for the 2027 presidential race.
He said he had no problem with Gachagua pursuing his political agenda but maintained that he would remain on President Ruto’s side.
“Continue with your political business. I have no problem with you, but wait until next year when we take you on together with William Ruto,” Kindiki said.

‘You Are a Small-Time Politician’
Kindiki also questioned Gachagua’s political experience, saying he had participated in major political battles long before his predecessor entered national politics.
He recalled the period when President Ruto and former President Uhuru Kenyatta faced cases at the International Criminal Court, saying he had been involved in the efforts surrounding the cases.
“Rigathi, you are a very small-time politician compared to me,” Kindiki said.
The Deputy President issued another warning to Gachagua, accusing him of misleading the Mount Kenya community and insisting that he would not allow divisions to take root in the region.
“My brother, I promise you I will deal with you. I cannot allow you to mislead our community,” Kindiki said.
He accused Gachagua of misusing his opportunity in office and said he was determined not to repeat the same mistakes.
Kindiki said leadership was temporary, noting that former presidents Mwai Kibaki, Daniel Moi and Uhuru Kenyatta had all eventually left office.
