The Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) has introduced a new online platform that allows employers and organizations to verify KCSE certificates before hiring job applicants.
In a statement July 31, KNEC said employers and other organizations can now use its e-certificate platform to confirm whether a candidate’s KCSE certificate is genuine. The council said the digital service is designed to make certificate verification faster, easier and more secure.
“Are you an organisation/institution and need to verify a candidate’s KCSE certificate? Now you can do so online for KCSE certificates from 1989 to 2024. Sign up today and start verifying the certificates instantly,” wrote KNEC in a statement.
Step-by-Step Process of Verifying KCSE Certificates Online
Under the new system, organizations must first register on the KNEC e-certificate portal by selecting the Verifier Organization option during the sign-up process.
After registration, an email containing a One-Time Password (OTP) is sent to verify the organization’s email address. Once the email is confirmed, KNEC reviews the organization’s details, along with its incorporation certificate, before approving the account.
After receiving approval, employers can log into the verifier dashboard and submit a New Verification Request to begin checking applicants’ academic credentials.

To verify a certificate, an organization is required to provide the candidate’s KCSE index number, examination year, examination type, and full name exactly as it appears on the certificate. A PDF copy of the candidate’s e-certificate must also be uploaded.
The platform allows organizations to verify several candidates in a single request, with each applicant appearing separately on the verification dashboard.
Before completing the process, employers are required to provide the reason for the verification, such as employment, admission, or immigration, confirm the email address that will receive the results, and accept KNEC’s consent declaration.
Verification fees can be paid using credits available in the organization’s account or through the eCitizen platform using M-Pesa and other supported payment methods.
Once the verification is complete, organizations can download a consolidated report covering all candidates submitted in the request, individual verification reports for each candidate, and a final status showing whether each certificate is genuine or has been referred to KNEC for further verification.
According to KNEC, the platform can verify KCSE certificates issued from 1989 to the present, giving employers and other institutions a quicker and more reliable way to authenticate academic qualifications before making recruitment or admission decisions.
