Although Mathematics plays a crucial role in various disciplines, not all career paths or courses require it as a mandatory subject. Mathematics is a foundational subject and a critical part of human thought and logic.

It is also integral to many other subjects, including Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM)-related careers.

Additionally, mathematics provides essential knowledge and skills that enable students to grasp and apply concepts in various fields.

Despite its importance, not all academic paths require a deep focus on mathematics, with many courses offered by the Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service (KUCCPS) that do not mandate it as a core subject.

That is because some courses have materials that do not require mathematical concepts or calculations.

So, what are some of the marketable courses that do not require mathematics in Kenya?

Teaching subjects like English, Literature, History, or Kiswahili does not require Mathematics and offers job opportunities in schools and educational institutions.

KUCCPS Courses Where Mathematics Is Not a Compulsory Subject

Bachelor of Education (Arts)

The Bachelor of Education (Arts) program is designed to prepare teachers for secondary schools.

It focuses on equipping graduates with the necessary skills to effectively teach and provide leadership in secondary schools and other tertiary institutions within a technologically oriented society.

Additionally, the program is suitable for individuals involved in educational management and training in both public and private tertiary institutions.

The Bachelor of Education (Arts) program includes teaching subjects such as English, Literature, History, Music, Geography, Christian Religious Education (CRE), Kiswahili, and Islamic Religious Education (IRE).

To qualify for these programs, applicants must meet the minimum requirements of a KCSE mean grade of C+ and a C+ in any two teaching subjects.

Bachelor of Law

The Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.) degree at the University of Nairobi prepares undergraduate students for careers in legal education in both the private and public sectors.

It also aims to expose students to the multifaceted nature of the development process, stimulating their intellectual and practical interest in nation-building, fidelity to the law and its institutions, and fostering a sense of responsibility for the national heritage.

The qualification for this course is a KCSE mean grade of C+ and above, with a minimum grade of B (plain) in English or Kiswahili.

While Mathematics is not a prerequisite for studying law, a basic understanding of mathematical concepts such as calculus, statistics, and probability can be beneficial. Lawyers may need to analyze numerical data, such as financial records, when handling legal cases.

Journalism/ Mass Communication/ Public Relations

Mass Communication, Journalism, and Public Relations are degree courses that do not require mathematics for enrollment.

To register for these courses, you must have a KCSE (Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education) with a C+ and a minimum of C+ in either English or Kiswahili.

These programs offer a range of career opportunities in the media, communication, and public relations sectors, including roles in journalism, broadcasting, corporate communication, and media production.

Early Childhood Education

Early Childhood Education (ECDE) does not require Mathematics from a certificate to a degree level.

To pursue a Bachelor of Early Childhood Education, you typically need a minimum mean grade of C+ (plus) at KCSE or an equivalent qualification, or a Diploma in Early Childhood Development (ECD) from a recognized institution.

Hospitality, Tourism and Management

The Bachelor of Hospitality Management (BHM) program is designed to produce highly trained professionals in all aspects of hospitality.

The program focuses on areas related to hospitality management, operations, and industry trends.

For Kenyan students, the degree does not require mathematics. However, applicants must meet the minimum university entry requirements, which include an overall C+ (plus) grade at KCSE.

Sociology, Anthropology

A Bachelor of Arts (BA) in Sociology and Anthropology provides a broad understanding of human societies and cultures, equipping students with skills in critical thinking, research, and cultural awareness for diverse career paths.

Sociology is the study of the social causes and consequences of human behavior.

Anthropology focuses on the study of human societies, cultures, and their development, encompassing various fields like cultural, biological, and linguistic anthropology.

Political Science

Political Science is a popular Bachelor of Arts degree option in Kenyan universities.

The main objective of the programme is to understand and appreciate the role of politics in human life and to equip students with skills of understanding and conducting research on politics, political processes and political systems globally.

It requires students to have a KCSE mean grade of C+ (plus), with at least a C+ in either English or Kiswahili. Graduates of this program can pursue careers in research, public policy, negotiation, and advocacy, making it a highly sought-after course.

Criminology is also an arts degree offered across different universities. It equips students with the skills necessary for the security industry and leadership in community policing.

A minimum KCSE mean grade of C+ (plus) is required to enroll in a Bachelor of Arts degree in Criminology. This course opens opportunities in the ever-growing security and law enforcement fields.

Fashion and Design

For those interested in creative fields, Fashion and Design offers a marketable career path in Kenya.

To pursue a Bachelor of Science in Fashion Design and Marketing, students need a KCSE mean grade of C+ (plus), with at least a C+ in Art and Design, as well as one science subject, such as Home Science.

If students choose to incorporate IT, some knowledge of Mathematics is also necessary. Fashion and Design graduates can work in design, marketing, and even business management in the fashion industry.

Social Work

A Bachelor of Arts (BA) in Social Work is a degree program that prepares graduates for entry-level social work practice, focusing on understanding and addressing social issues while promoting well-being within diverse communities.

Social work graduates have played a critical role in the country’s development, particularly in managing children’s affairs, including rehabilitation and training, as well as gender and development, youth affairs, and probation and correctional services.

Their contributions extend to managing community development programs, mobilizing and building the capacity of communities, providing medical social work in health facilities, offering counseling services, overseeing human resource management, and supporting micro-enterprise development.

Other courses that do not require Mathematics as a compulsory subject include the Bachelor of Arts in International Relations, Bachelor of Arts in Counseling Psychology, and Bachelor of Arts in Community Development.

Additional courses include Leadership and Management, Bachelor of Theology in Pastoral Studies and Religion, and Bachelor of Arts in Gender, Women, and Development Studies.
