The Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service (KUCCPS) sets varying cut-off points for Bachelor of Science programmes across public and private universities in Kenya.

This depends on demand, institutional capacity, and the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) performance.

KUCCPS advises candidates to ensure their cluster weights are above the set cut-off points when selecting degree programmes.

According to the Placement Service, students whose cluster weights are above the previous cut-off points stand a higher chance of being placed, provided they apply for the specific programme.

KUCCPS Bachelor of Science programme

The Bachelor of Science programme is a natural sciences degree that focuses on the study of natural phenomena, including geological, physical, chemical, and biological aspects of the universe.

The programme is interdisciplinary in nature and cuts across five key disciplines: Chemistry, Geology, Geography and Environmental Studies, Meteorology, Physics, as well as Mathematics and Biology (Botany and Zoology).

It is designed to produce graduates equipped with the relevant knowledge and practical skills to participate in innovation and creativity, including the creation of new jobs and the redefinition of existing roles.

The overall goal of the programme is to train high-level, competent personnel with strong scientific knowledge and refined technical skills in science and its applications.

This is intended to support scientific innovation, advance science, information, and technology, and address broader societal challenges related to industrial growth and human resource development for the betterment of humanity.

The programme normally runs for four academic years, consisting of eight semesters.

Bachelor of Science Entry Requirements

Applicants seeking admission into the Bachelor of Science programme must have a KCSE or an equivalent qualification recognized by any University Senate, with a minimum mean grade of C+ (C Plus).

Candidates are also required to have at least a C+ (C Plus) pass in three science subjects, one of which must be Mathematics, under either of the following two alternative subject combinations:

Alternative A: Chemistry, Biology, Physics, Geography, Mathematics, and Computer Science (all at C+ level).

Alternative B: Physical Sciences, Biological Sciences, Geography, Mathematics, and Computer Science (all at C+ level).

In addition, applicants may be considered if they hold a KCSE mean grade of C- (C Minus) together with a Diploma in a relevant field from an institution recognized by the University Senate.

Candidates with a Kenya Advanced Certificate of Education (KACE) or equivalent qualification must have at least two principal passes in mathematics and either physical or biological sciences.

Alternatively, applicants with a science- or technology-based degree or its equivalent from an institution accredited by the Commission for University Education (CUE) may also be considered.
