Labour and Social Protection Cabinet Secretary Alfred Mutua has called on jobless Kenyans to pick lessons from a former Kenyatta International Conference Centre (KICC) watchman.
Speaking while officially opening the East African Employability Summit on Tuesday, October 29, Mutua said that the security officer, Martha Kalui, had landed a job abroad.

“Her initiative and strong work ethic didn’t go unnoticed, leading to an employment opportunity in Qatar—a testament to how the right attitude can open doors,” stated Mutua.
Consequently, the CS decided to cover Kalui’s passport fees and charges, to ensure she was well prepared for her anticipated travel.
“I took it upon myself to personally cover her passport fees and charges, ensuring she has all the requisite documentation for her travel.
“Martha’s journey is a powerful reminder that emotional intelligence and adaptability are essential in today’s competitive job market, and her story serves as an example for young people everywhere,” he added.

Mutua Launches 1 Million Next-Level Initiative
At the same time, the CS launched several initiatives aimed at solving youth unemployment in the country including the 1 Million Next Level Initiative.
The program is aimed at connecting over one million Kenyan youth annually with job and entrepreneurial opportunities.
Additionally, Mutua launched the Kenya Skills Hub, “a virtual one-stop platform designed to provide young people with access to crucial information on skills development and work-based learning.”
Moreover, he launched the National Policy on Linking Industry to Education, Training, and Research to better align education with industry needs, the National Guidelines for Career Guidance, and a new National Career Guidance Training Manual.
“These resources aim to bridge the gap between academic training and practical job market requirements, providing young people with a roadmap to navigate their career journeys,” a statement from the ministry read in part.
