The Acting Inspector General of Police (IG) has convened a meeting following a recent surge in road accidents across the country.
In a statement dated September 17, 2024, Masengeli said that he would meet with top security heads to delve into the matter
“We have observed an increase in road traffic accidents across the country, and that is the reason for which we convened this consultative meeting with all Regional Traffic Enforcement Officers to address the road carnage issue, and corruption in the Traffic Unit,” the AIG stated.
Masengeli urged members of the public to abide by the traffic rules.
“We call upon all members of the public to ensure compliance with road safety requirements,” part of the statement read.
The IG’s statement comes amid an increase in road accidents which has led to several deaths.
Recent road accidents
On September 15, a truck belonging to Kengen was involved in a fatal accident in the Keroche area in Nakuru County.
According to reports by witnesses, the truck veered off the road and collided with two other vehicles.
The two vehicles that were involved in the accident included a Matatu that was ferrying passengers and a Prado TX.
The electricity generating company was transporting an unknown heavy metal which rolled off following the accident.

On September 13, six learners succumbed to injuries following a grisly road accident in Witu Shopping Center, Kitui County.
The six school-going children were killed in the hit-and-run accident that happened during the morning at the Wiitu shopping center on the Kitui – Kibwezi road.
Elsewhere, on September 3, nine people were confirmed dead following a road accident involving a Public Service Vehicle (PSV) matatu full of passengers at Koguta along the Londiani – Muhoroni road.
The accident involved a matatu operating under Kamtco Sacco and a truck that was ferrying maize flour.
It is reported that the accident happened when the driver of the truck which was heading towards Londiani’s direction lost control after hitting a pothole.

NTSA’s latest statistics on accidents
According to the latest data from the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA), road accidents across the country have claimed at least 3,056 lives between January 1 and August 27, 2024.
This marks an increase of 146 deaths compared to the 2,910 recorded in the same period in 2023.
Since the beginning of 2024, 7,114 Kenyans have been involved in road accidents, marking an increase of 703 compared to last year, 3674 were seriously injured and 585 suffered from minor injuries.
Pedestrians have recorded the highest number of deaths in road accidents since the start of the year, according to the Authority.
