Kericho police officers arrested a matatu tout for allegedly inciting election-related violence.
The suspect by the name Kipruto Vincent Koech was purportedly threatening vendors with ejection from the county after the August general elections due to their different political affiliations.
A statement by the Directorate of Criminal Investigation (DCI) on Saturday, May 28 reported that the suspect had parked his vehicle to block the vendors from carrying out their businesses.
“As the vendors asked the matatu driver to give them some space to attend to their customers, the tout shouted them down telling them that their days in the county were numbered, as they would be ejected before the forthcoming general elections,” read the statement.
The DCI further stated that, the vendors who feared for their lives and businesses filed complaints at the Kericho police station.
Moreover, is was reported that these vendors have operated in the said space for almost 20 years now.
Mr. Koech is currently behind bars awaiting arraignment.
