On Monday, December 23, the Ministry of Education addressed claims regarding the university entry grade for the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) 2024 candidates.
In a post on their X account, the Ministry flagged a viral post circulating on social media as false.
The misleading post falsely alleged that Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba had raised the university entry grade to a B-.
According to the flagged article, the CS announced a significant change in university entry requirements for KCSE candidates starting with the 2024 cohort, students who would require a minimum grade of B- (minus) to qualify for direct entry into university programs.
Ministry of Education clarifies university entry grade
The post further alleged that this move was intended to elevate academic excellence and address the need for higher competency within Kenya’s education system.
Additionally, it claimed that the Education CS emphasized the importance of maintaining the quality of graduates in a highly competitive job market.

In Kenya, university student entry is coordinated by KUCCPS, which governs the placement process for those who have completed the KCSE with a minimum grade of C+ for degree courses.
The system allows for gender-neutral admission standards, contrary to rumors of differential grading by gender.
KUCCPS manages application periods through an online portal, where students can apply for their preferred courses or request transfers between institutions.
The Ministry of Education’s clarification comes days after the Education CS announced when he is going to release the KCSE results.
The KCSE 2024 exams officially came to an end on November 22, 2024, which saw the commencement of marking by examiners.
Julius Ogamba announces date of releasing KCSE Results
965,501 candidates had been registered to sit for the national examinations, according to the Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC).
CS Ogamba while speaking on Wednesday, December 11, announced that the results will be released in January 2025.
The Ministry of Education had confirmed that marking would be concluded by the end of December.

Earlier this month, the Kenya National Examination Council (KNEC) in a post on X (formerly Twitter), refuted online claims showing a new grading system for the exams, which are still being marked.
The council denied reports suggesting that the grading system for this year’s exams had been finalized.
