The Nation Media Group (NMG) has announced several changes within its management.
In a news article published by the Kimathi Street-based media house, the company’s Editor-in-Chief, Joe Ageyo, stated that the changes are meant to keep pace with the evolving media landscape and content.
“As the content landscape rapidly evolves, our newsroom will continue to respond appropriately by constantly evaluating our structures and making adjustments,” Ageyo said.
The changes made by the organization will affect the editorial team within the company, which is meant to accelerate digital innovation and enhance audience engagement across all platforms in Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania, where NMG owns several media outlets.
NMG Announces Changes Within Its Editorial Department
According to NMG, restructuring the editorial department will involve the introduction of new roles and the renaming of some existing roles.
Some of the notable journalists affected by these changes include Senior News Anchor James Smart, whose position, previously Managing Editor, Productions and Partnerships, has been renamed to Managing Editor, Broadcast and New Media.
In his previous role, Smart played a pivotal role in the growth of NMG’s podcast segment.
In his new position, he will focus on accelerating video content creation and expanding new formats across the newsroom.

Another individual affected by the changes is Washington Gikunju, who previously held the position of Managing Editor, Planning and Content Hubs (now titled Managing Editor, Content Strategy) and has been appointed to the newly created role of Managing Editor, Publishing.
According to Ageyo, this position has been created to consolidate the publishing workflows for the print outlets and their respective websites. Gikunju will enhance the publishing processes for print outlets and their related websites, with lead editors reporting directly to him.
Additionally, Harry Misiko, who previously served as Lead Editor, News Desk, has been promoted to Content Strategy.
In this new role, he will oversee Content Hubs and the News Desk. NMG’s Editor in Chief urged employees to accord the appointees cooperation following their appointments.

1.James Smart:
James Smart is a seasoned Kenyan journalist and Managing Editor at Nation Media Group who was is known for his role as an anchor of NTV Kenya’s primetime news.
With over 15 years in broadcast media, he pioneered The Trend and led NMG’s podcast initiatives like Case Number Zero. He has also worked as a news anchor at KTN, Standard Group.
His education includes a Mass Communication degree from Tangaza College, Nairobi, and a Master’s in International Journalism from Cardiff University, UK (2015, Chevening Scholarship).
2.Washington Gikunju:
Washington Gikunju is a Kenyan journalist and Managing Editor, Planning and Newsdesk at Nation Media Group, overseeing the Centralised News Desk and daily news delivery.
With extensive experience, he has served as Assistant Editor for Business Daily and Managing Editor of The East African.

He holds a BCom in Finance from the University of Nairobi (2002–2006). Gikunju’s work focuses on regional news, business, and digital transformation, contributing to NMG’s audience-led operations.
3. Harry Misiko:
Harry Misiko is a Kenyan journalist and Senior Political Reporter at Nation Media Group, known for his in-depth coverage of Kenyan politics and governance.
With over a decade of experience, he has contributed to NMG’s print and digital platforms, including Daily Nation.
He holds a Bachelor’s degree in Communication and Media Studies from the University of Nairobi. Misiko is also an alumnus of the Chevening Scholarship and alumni of City, University of London, and the Aga Khan University, Nairobi.
