Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) have arrested four suspects after conducting a raid on a Runda home in connection with stealing Ksh 25 million from a foreigner whom they allegedly duped using fake gold.
In a statement, the DCI stated that the arrests were made after the victim reported the crime.
“A combined team of DCI officers drawn from the Nairobi region and DCI Gigiri have arrested four fake gold merchants at Runda estate and recovered fake gold bars weighing approximately 9.5 kgs and assorted items that the suspects were using in their illicit trade.
The arrest of the four snake oil merchants follows a report from a foreign national who had earlier been defrauded Ksh USD 200,000 in a phony gold scheme,” read part of the statement.
According to the DCI, upon receiving the information, the detectives proceeded to a targeted dwelling located within plot number 685 along Glory Valley Lane, where they managed to arrest the suspects: Felix Odiambo Otieno, Derrick Odhiambo Omore, Mohamed Ibrahim Mohamed, and Moses Odhiambo Auma, while other suspects escaped and are still at large.

The Criminal Investigative body recovered several items after raiding the home. Some of the recovered items include fake gold bars, a weighing machine, a plastic briefcase containing an electronic gold tester machine (tester gun), assorted documents, among other items.
Subsequently, the scene was processed by Crime Scene Investigation (CSI) detectives, exhibits were secured, and the suspects were kept in custody pending processing and arraignment.

A similar incident also occurred on April 30, 2025, when detectives in Nairobi arrested 11 suspects who allegedly defrauded a victim of Ksh 70.6 million in a fraudulent gold scheme. The suspects arrested included seven Kenyans and four foreign nationals.
11 Individuals Arrested After Defrauding a Victim Ksh 70 Million
The DCI reported that the 11 individuals were taken into custody after detectives uncovered a scheme involving the fraudulent sale of fake gold to unsuspecting victims.

Following a tip-off, detectives tracked the suspects to their hideout in Spring Valley estate, where they recovered 350 kilograms of counterfeit gold, dust coat marked with the Ministry of Mining insignia, an electronic gold testing device, and various other pieces of evidence.
“Upon search, detectives recovered a haul of fake gold weighing 305kg, along with a weighing machine and an electronic gold tester, commonly known as a Tester Gun.
Also recovered were assorted documents and a dust coat bearing the Ministry of Mining logo, which the suspects are believed to be using to gain the trust of unsuspecting individuals while executing their fraudulent schemes,” the DCI stated.
