Kenya Women Parliamentary Association (Kewopa) now want the government to enforce a total ban on the travel of domestic workers to the Middle East.
Moreover, on behalf of the association, Kewopa chairperson Muthoni Wamuchomba, stated that the women leaders are demanding for immediate freeze on exportation of Kenyan workers until better terms are negotiated by the government.
“We are demanding for a total ban of Kenyan workers to the Middle East,” Wamuchomba stated.
Kewopa expressed their concerns after the latest incident where a Kenyan domestic worker is seen in a video shared online breastfeeding her employer’s puppies.
It is alleged that the woman in the video left for Saudi Arabia two months after giving birth.
Furthermore, the MPs have asked the government to give a list of all Kenyan domestic workers to the Middle East and their current condition.
In addition, they also want a list of all recruiting agents and the number of girls they have taken to the Middle East Countries.

Nonetheless, members of Kewopa include Prof. Phyllis Bartoo (Moiben), Veronica Maina (nominated), Liza Chelule (Nakuru MP) and Dorothy Muthoni (nominated).
While speaking at Parliament on Tuesday, October 11, the law makers echoed that the treatment of Kenyan girls in Saudi Arabia is modern day slavery which must be condemned.
According to Maina, the ill-treatment meted on Kenya workers is unfortunate and a serious breach of labor laws guiding the worker/employer relationship.
“I am urging our young girls not to take any flight before the government negotiates with the Government of Saudi Arabia,” Maina stated.
