A family in Mwea East is mourning the loss of their 5-year-old son, who was killed after being run over by a police vehicle.
The young boy was walking back home from school on Saturday, September 29, when he was hit by the vehicle.
According to the boy’s mother, she learned about the incident from her grandmother, who told her that the child had been rushed to Kimbimbi Sub County Hospital for treatment.
Further, she learned that the driver of the vehicle, a police officer stationed at Itange police station, was the one who took the five-year-old to hospital.
However, despite efforts to save him, the boy died.
“I was informed that my child was taken to a nearby dispensary and later rushed to the hospital.
“When I got there, I was shown the lifeless body of my son and informed that he was dead when he was brought to the hospital,” the mother narrated.

Residents Demand Arrest of Police
The incident has sparked outrage among residents of the area, who took to the streets to demand justice for the family and the arrest of the officer involved.
According to the locals, the officer in question is notorious for reckless driving and breaking traffic rules.
Also, the locals have accused him of driving while drunk on several occasions and ignoring warnings from other road users.
“This police officer has been driving that vehicle while drunk. Even yesterday he was spotted driving while drunk. We want the Kirinyaga Couty police commander to take action or tell us if that officer is above the law.”
“There is another incident where he almost hit a woman with the vehicle at the market. Has that police been arrested yet because if it were anyone else, they would be behind bars,” a resident lamented.
Protests erupted along the road where the incident occurred, with community members calling for swift legal action against the officer and an end to the impunity they believe is exhibited by the officer.
