The debate over the Mount Kenya region’s political leadership has intensified as Members of the County Assembly (MCAs) from 12 counties split between supporting Interior Cabinet Secretary (CS) Kithure Kindiki and Deputy President (DP) Rigathi Gachagua. This comes at when there are claims and signs of a fallout between President William Ruto and his deputy.
The MCAs clashed over the resolution to endorse Kindiki as the link between the Mount Kenya region and the national government.
MCAs convened in Murang’a County on September 18 to support the move to have Kindiki link them to the executive instead of Gachagua.
“MCA’s welfare is a stalled project, which we believe we have tried with everyone else, and we have not seen any fruits. We are saying that even if it means going through Kindiki so that the welfare of the MCAs in this country can be sorted, then so be it,” said one of the MCAs.
Those allied with Kindiki said he had become of age to lead the region in national matters, emphasizing that he would be the region’s point man for political and development matters.
“The aim of the meeting was to discuss how MCAs can partner with the CS in the Ministry of Interior, which is the coordinator of development in the country, so that our region also benefits,” said another MCA.
However, as soon as the Kindiki team finished addressing the media, the pro-Gachagua faction quickly responded. The MCAs claimed that they were misled into attending the meeting and reaffirmed their support for the Deputy President.
“There is a plan to undermine the Deputy President, and we as the MCAs and leaders at the grassroots level will not allow that,” said one MCA.

Njuri Ncheke Endorse Kindiki
Additionally, close to 2,000 Njuri Ncheke Elders occupied the roads leading to their shrine in Meru County, supporting the decision of 69 Members of Parliament (MPs) to have Kindiki as the leader.
The elders announced that it was time the Mount Kenya East illuminated the leadership path for the West and the region at large, while the mountain continued to rumble.
“Today, Njuri Ncheke, in their numbers, have endorsed him as our kingpin and spokesman. He will be our link as Mt. Kenya East to President William Ruto,” Njuri Ncheke Chairman Adriano Aruyaru said.
The elders urged Kindiki to work with Ruto and bring development to Mt. Kenya, as well as other parts of the country.

Gachagua Skips Ruto Events

The DP was absent when Ruto launched the strategic framework for the implementation of terms and conditions of service and other reforms for members of the National Police Service, Kenya Prison Service, and National Youth Service (NYS).
He was also absent when the head of state met the seven legislators from his home county of Nyeri.
Over the weekend, Gachagua skipped President Ruto’s church service in Nyeri County, choosing to worship in neighboring Kirinyaga County.
