Spiro, one of Africa’s leading electric vehicle (EV) company has made history by launching the continent’s first all-women assembly line for electric motors and chargers.
The initiative, launched on Wednesday, March 25, marks a major step in promoting gender inclusivity while boosting Africa’s EV manufacturing capabilities.
The new assembly lines are part of the Spiro Academy’s upskilling program that aims to enhance local production and create employment opportunities for women in the EV sector.
Spiro’s investment in women-led manufacturing aligns with its broader goal of building sustainable mobility solutions for Africa.
“This initiative not only empowers women in the workforce but also enhances Spiro’s manufacturing capabilities to meet the growing demand for sustainable mobility solutions,” the company stated.

Spiro Launches New facilities
Consequently, Spiro has launched several state-of-the-art facilities.
They include the all-women motor assembly line set to produce motors on a daily basis, ensuring efficiency and precision in manufacturing.
Also, the company launched a home charger production. A newly established line will manufacture home chargers daily, catering to both residential use and battery swap stations.
Further, Spiro launched a fast charger production line that will deliver units on a daily basis, which will be strategically deployed to enhance EV charging accessibility across key locations.
“This initiative underscores Spiro’s commitment to innovation, sustainability, and women’s empowerment while addressing Africa’s urgent infrastructure needs for electric mobility,” added Spiro.
Spiro CEO, Kaushik Burman, noted that Spiro differentiates from other competitors in terms of affordability and high-standard products, with a main focus on the localization of industrialization
“We are aiming to assemble at least ten times what we are currently assembling in Kenya with the long term goal being having more than fifty thousand Spiro bikes on the road this year.
“Spiro is an ecosystem, we are not just a two wheeler electric motorcycle company, we are a tech driven company, from energy provision to e-mobility to reduction of carbon emissions to integration of artificial intelligence in our battery models, the goal here is to power Africa with Africa centered solutions with the slogan Buy Africa, Build Africa,” he said.

Partnerships with KCB and SACCOs
At the same time, the Deputy Country Head, Raymond Camina highlighted plans to bring in global partners to enhance production quality while ensuring knowledge transfer to local workers.
Also, he announced partnerships with KCB Bank and various SACCOs, allowing more Kenyans to access Spiro bikes through affordable financing options.
“This is the only EV plant in the world where women are assembling key bike components. It proves our commitment to detail and innovation,” Camina said.
With over 24,000 electric bikes and 17 million battery swaps already completed, Spiro continues expanding across six African markets.
Its focus on gender balance, sustainability, and local empowerment aligns with UN Sustainable Development Goal 5 (Gender Equality), paving the way for a more inclusive EV industry.
“The plans that we have are quite grand. We are sitting in a space where we will be partnering with a commercial bank, KCB to be precise, and we have extended that onto different SACCOs around the whole country
“Where Kenyans will be able to even afford more Spiro bikes at more affordable prices and today the motorline marks the beginning of the very first step where we are going to embark in this exciting journey,” he noted.
