Three students from the Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology (MMUST) have won awards at the Intercontinental High Technology Championship in Russia.
President William Ruto made the announcement while speaking at the Innovation Week Summit 2024 held at the Edge Convention centre in Nairobi.
“I’ve just gotten a report that three Kenyan university students from Masinde Muliro have participated and won awards in the Intercontinental High Technology Championship at St. Petersburg in Russia,” said Ruto.

The President, while stating the specific field that the three scooped awards, commended Masinde Muliro University for the notable achievement.
“And the awards they won are global awards demonstrating that we have what it takes. I must commend Masinde Muliro for this achievement congratulations. And I’m told they won awards in the medical digital transfer technology field, innovation in engineering technology and one in network and system administration,” added Ruto.

The three students are Elvis Amiani, a talented software developer from the School of Computing and Informatics; Phabian Benard Odoyo, an electrical engineering student from the School of Engineering & Built Environment Engineering Technology section; and Nyambane Moraa Edinah.
President Ruto stated that their win serves to demonstrate the creativity found in tertiary institutions.

“This is just a glimpse of the wealth and the pool of creativity and innovation coming from our universities and it is important that we nurture, and we build an ecosystem that supports this,” stated Ruto

Thier selection was informed by MMUST’s success in the first round of competitions that were held from September 15 to September 26,2024, where the team participated online.
The competitions revolved around nine areas including, Manufacturing and Engineering technologies, medical technology, Information and Communication Technologies; Civil Construction Technologies; Transport and Logistics Technologies; Education Technologies; Creative Industry Technologies; and Service Sector.
The competitions taking place at the International Innovation Academy began on November 20, 2024, to and are set to conclude on December 1, 2024, in St Petersbur, Russia.
