Two separate accidents and an ongoing graduation ceremony at the United States International the University (USIU) have led to a massive traffic disruption along the busy Thika Road.
Motorists plying Thika Superhighway route have complained that the busy highway is currently experiencing traffic congestion near the General Service Unit (GSU) headquarters following two separate accidents involving multiple vehicles.
Preliminary reports that in the first incident, a matatu collided with a saloon car, while the second crash involved two private saloon cars.
The situation, according to additional reports, has been further complicated by the ongoing USIU’s 46th graduation ceremony, which is nearing its conclusion and contributing to the traffic jam.
Photos seen by The Kenya Times showed a long trail of vehicles stalled along the busy highway.
The photos showed a heavy traffic buildup in both directions towards Nairobi and Thika.
Reports indicate that authorities are already on-site working to clear the road.

In addition, motorists using Thika road were advised to seek alternative routes and exercise caution while navigating the area.
USIU issues Thika Road traffic alert
The United States International University had on Friday warned of traffic disruptions. In an alert, the University noted that the gradyuation ceremony scheduled to end at around 2. 00pm. will affect traffic flow, further urging motorists to plan accordingly.
“USIU-Africa’s 46th Commencement Ceremony scheduled for Saturday, October 12, 2024, from 8.00am to 2.00pm., will affect flow of traffic around the university. We encourage those who may be affected to plan accordingly,” the alert reads in part.
It adds, “Any inconvenience is deeply regretted.”

In a separate traffic disruption alert, motorists have been warned of abnormally wide loads that will disrupt traffic on different roads across the country as transportation begins from Mombasa to Malaba.
Motorists warned of 3-Month traffic disruptions
TransEast logistic company in a notice dated October 2, 2024, indicated, that the transportation of the loads had begun on October 1.
Among the routes set to be affected by the transportation of the cargo include the Mombasa-Nairobi-Nakuru-Eldoret-Malaba and Nairobi-Nakuru-Kericho-Kisii-Migori-Isibania routes.
The Mombasa-Nairobi-Nakuru-Kericho-Awasi-Ahero-Kisumu route is also set to be disrupted.
The notice further indicated that the transportation would continue for a period of about 90 days, until December 30, 2024.
Consequently, motorists were asked to exercise caution when plying the listed roads.
“This is to notify all road users and the general public of the abnormal load movement on the following routes” the notice read in part.
“Please exercise caution when in the vicinity of this convoy.”
Additionally, the logistics company detailed that the loads being transported comprise of a boat, earth-moving machines, and breakbulk.
