President Donald Trump, speaking on December 9, stated that Ukraine had lost significant territory to Russia before his involvement.
“Do you think Ukraine has lost this war? Well, they’ve lost territory long before I got here. They lost a whole strip of seafront, big seafront-trump,” he said.
He highlighted the situation in Crimea, describing it as “huge, but connected to that part of Ukraine we’re talking about now, right? By a little narrow isthmus. It’s four sides of the ocean in the warmest part. The best weather, the best everything. But Obama gave it away.”
Trump also criticised U.S. aid to Ukraine, claiming that despite receiving $350 billion with President Joe Biden’s support, about a quarter of the country was missing.
“He got crooked Joe Biden to give him $350 billion, and look what he got: about 25% of his country is missing,” he said.
The president’s remarks have intensified discussions about Ukraine’s options in the ongoing conflict, with suggestions that the country may face increasing pressure to consider a peace deal with Russia.

He focused on both the strategic and geographical aspects of lost territories, signalling his view that U.S. leadership and support had not effectively prevented territorial losses.

“Yeah. I think so. It’s been a long time. It hasn’t been doing particularly well,” he said.
He stated that the country has been using war as a reason not to hold the elections, and the people of Ukraine should have that choice.
According to Trump, Zelenskyy “might win,” though he added that he does not know who would ultimately come out on top.
He said that while people talk about Ukraine as a democracy, there comes a point where “it’s no longer a democracy.”
“I don’t know who would win. But they haven’t had an election in a long time. You know, they talk about a democracy, but it gets to a point where it’s not a democracy anymore,” he said.
