The ongoing construction works on the Usenge Bridge in Siaya County have raised hopes among residents and businesspeople who have for years struggled with flooding, disrupted transport and difficult movement across the area.
Residents say the works have already started changing the situation, with efforts to improve the water passage, construction of the new bridge and a temporary road providing an alternative route for motorbike users.
They believe the project could transform movement and trade once completed.
Improved Water Flow and Temporary Road Ease Movement
Residents say workers have been widening and improving the water path to allow more water to pass, as construction of the bridge continues.
A temporary road has also provided relief, particularly to boda boda riders who previously faced difficulties crossing when the main route was affected by water.

The alternative route has helped reconnect people on both sides of the affected section as construction progresses.
For residents, the ongoing works are a sign that a long-standing challenge could finally be addressed.
They say the development has renewed hope in a community that had begun to lose confidence after years of disruption caused by flooding and poor access.
Flooding Had Disrupted Homes, Farms and Businesses
The area has previously experienced serious disruption whenever River Yala overflowed into Lake Victoria, particularly during periods of heavy rainfall.
Residents recall occasions when floodwater covered the road, making it difficult or impossible for vehicles and pedestrians to cross. Traders were sometimes forced to use boats to move from one side to the other.
The flooding also affected homes and farms. Some residents were forced to leave their homes while others abandoned or temporarily relocated from farms as rising water made the area difficult to inhabit and cultivate.
For businesspeople, the disruption came with financial losses. When movement was interrupted, customers could not easily reach businesses.
Residents say these challenges had created uncertainty for businesses and slowed economic activity, with some people considering leaving the area altogether.
Residents Hope Bridge Will Attract New Investment
With the bridge now under construction, residents are hoping improved transport, and the project will unlock economic opportunities for Usenge people.
They expect easier movement to strengthen local businesses by making it simpler for traders, customers and transport operators to access the area. Better connectivity could also make it easier to transport agricultural and fishing products to markets.
Residents further hope that the improved infrastructure will encourage investors to consider Usenge for new projects, including a proposed fish factory and housing developments.
They believe increased investment would create employment opportunities, expand local businesses and raise demand for services such as accommodation, retail shops and transport.
The area around Usenge has experienced repeated disruption from flooding, and the bridge is being viewed as a transport project and as a catalyst for economic and social development.
Residents say completing the works will be critical to restoring reliable movement, protecting livelihoods and opening Usenge to new opportunities.
