Water a very important resource for all human life is increasingly becoming scarce and expensive. Currently, Eldoret residents have protested a 300% water tariff hike by Eldoret Water and Sanitation Company Limited widely referred to as Eldowas.
In a media interview with the Eldoret residents on November 13, 2024, the residents complained about the increase stating that it was put into effect without any prior information and involvement on the percentage increase.
Speaking during the interview Kipkorir Menjo one of the residents said, “They should have sent people SMS the way they send accounts every time to ask for money so that the real stakeholders participate.”
“It is not all about bringing people from outside to pass the increase without considering the residents. We have tried to tell them that prices are escalating on everything, and their response is that Eldoret has become a city,” he further added.

Complaints on the Tariff
At the same time, the residents have warned on the increase of water tariffs and other commodities stating that it will send away investors instead of attracting them.
Kipkorir went on to cite that many people will not be able to afford since the water charges have gone up extraordinarily to an extent of superseding the rent.

Moreover, the residents questioned whether the act of increasing the water charges portrays an advancement or backroad in the development of Eldoret city. Moreover, Kipkorir while speaking on behalf of the residents noted that they are not against any increase but the 300 per cent increase is highly exaggerated.

Eldoret Water and Sanitation Company Tarrif Increase Notice
Eldoret Water and Sanitation Company Ltd gave a notice on adjustment of the water and sewerage services tariff as per Kenya Gazette Notice No. 12825 dated 4th October 2024 of adjustment granted by the regulator, Water Services Regulatory Board (WASREB), in October 2024.
Notably, in the notice the company stated that the adjustment was in pursuant to the application of tariff adjustment made by the company in January 2024 and was recommended by stakeholders in the meeting at Uasin Gishu Social Hall on 15th May 2024.
The notice further asked the residents to take note that the adjustment was to be effected in their bill for November 2024.
