The National Police Service (NPS) has announced a nationwide crackdown on all motorists following a rise in fatal road accidents in recent days.
In a statement on Sunday, August 10, NPS spokesperson Muchiri Nyaga sent condolences to families who have lost loved ones and wished a speedy recovery to those injured.
According to police, the majority of the recent crashes could have been avoided if road users adhered to basic safety rules.
The National Police Service is working collaboratively with various state agencies to conduct thorough and expeditious investigations to determine the causes of these accidents.
Road crashes cause immense suffering to the affected families, and every possible measure must be taken to prevent further loss of life.

NPS on the Main Causes of Accidents
The main causes include speeding, dangerous overtaking, drink-driving, overloading, driver fatigue, and careless road crossing.
Therefore, to stop the rising carnage, NPS has noted that it has launched a multi-pronged enforcement strategy in partnership with other state agencies.
The measures include speed monitoring, including Intensified checks on public service vehicles (PSVs) and commercial trucks.
Also, police officers will be targeting goods and passenger vehicles exceeding legal limits, and crack down on PSVs operating outside their licensed routes.
NPS and other enforcement officers will also be conducting random alcohol testing for drivers nationwide.
The officers will be removing unlawful lights, verifying NTSA-issued licences, and impounding unroadworthy vehicles.
At the same time, they will be conducting Sacco compliance audits to ensure PSV operators adhere to set safety standards.
“It should be appreciated that life is not only precious but irreplaceable. To effectively prevent deaths on our roads, all stakeholders in road transport must play their rightful roles.
“Let every road user be aware of the consequences of their actions and take responsibility for their own safety and that of others,” added the statement.

Police Plead With Kenyans
The police have called on all road users, drivers, passengers, pedestrians, and transport operators to play their role in preventing accidents.
Additionally, passengers have been encouraged to report any reckless driving through the NPS toll-free numbers 999, 911, 112, or the #FichuakwaDCI hotline 0800 722 203.
Reports can also be made via WhatsApp on 0709 570 000.
“This is not a problem the police can solve alone. Every Kenyan who uses the road must take responsibility. Reckless behaviour on our roads is costing lives, and that must stop,” Nyaga noted.
