Bobi Wine, whose real name is Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, is a Ugandan politician, activist, and musician who has become one of the most prominent voices against President Yoweri Museveni’s long-standing administration.
Wine uses his artistic influence and political activism as a symbol of youth resistance in Uganda’s dictatorial regime.
Early Life and Education
Bobi Wine was born and raised in Kamwokya, Uganda, on February 12, 1982.
He comes from apolitical family as his grandfather was a rebel who fought on the same side as Museveni during that leader’s rebel days, and his father was a politician in the foremost opposition party.
The political activist is the son of Margaret Nalunkuuma and Jackson Wellington Ssentamu.

His father was sentenced to death during the reign of President Milton Obote and had to go into exile.
Wine attended local primary schools before joining Kitante Hill School and later Makerere College School for his secondary education.
He enrolled at Makerere University in 2001 to study a social science degree, but later changed to a degree in Music, Dance, and Drama, graduating in 2004.
Later, Robert joined the International University of East Africa to pursue a degree in International Law and Legal Studies, graduating in 2016.
Bobi Wine’s Political Career
Bobi Wine’s political journey officially began in 2017 when he contested and won the Kyadondo East parliamentary seat in Kampala.
He won the seat running as an independent candidate, defeating both the ruling party and opposition candidates in a decisive victory.

After his election, Wine quickly became known for his criticism of Museveni’s government policies, particularly those related to corruption, youth unemployment, and attempts to amend the constitution to remove presidential age limits.
Wine was among the leaders of the Togikwatako (Luganda: “Do Not Touch”) campaign against the proposed constitutional. He was also among MPs who were suspended by the speaker of Parliament for disorderly conduct and, when they refused to leave the Parliament chambers, were forcibly removed and arrested.
He released his song ‘Freedom’ in 2017, criticizing President Museveni during the debate over the age limit. The song was banned from Ugandan radio and television stations.
Wine launched the People Power movement, which mobilized young voters under the slogan ‘People Power, Our Power,’ and was adopted by the National Unity Platform party.
Currently, he is the leader of the National Unity Platform (NUP)
In 2021, Bobi Wine contested for the general election, vying for the presidential seat and losing to Museveni.
In Uganda’s election that is taking place on Thursday, 15 January 2026, Bobi Wine is again contesting for the presidential seat, hoping to defeat Museveni, who has been serving as the president since 1986.
