The government has declared Tuesday, December 27 and Monday, January 2, public holidays.
The Ministry of Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki on Thursday, December 22 confirmed to the press that the two days will be observed as public holidays.
This extension will allow Kenyans enjoy a four-day Christmas weekend.
The 2 days will serve as an extension of Christmas Day and New Year’s Day which fall on Sundays while Boxing Day is on a Monday.
Moreover, the CS explained that December 27 followed Sunday December 25 and Monday, December 26, which are listed as holiday days under the Kenya holiday events calendar.
Likewise, January 1, which is regarded as a public holiday globally falls on a Sunday, thence pushing the holiday to Monday, January 2, 2023.

Furthermore, the directive is in line with section 4 of the Public Holidays Act that provides that if a public holiday falls on a Sunday, the following day will automatically become a public holiday.
“Where, in any year, a day in Part I of the Schedule falls on a Sunday, then the first succeeding day, not being a public holiday, shall be a public holiday and the first-mentioned day shall cease to be a public holiday,” reads the act in part.
