Gridx Africa Development Limited has applied for an electric power generation license, which, if granted, will see the company rival KenGen and Kenya Power, who have dominated the energy sector for decades. The license will be submitted on December 10, 2025.
In a notice on Wednesday, November 26, 2025, the company stated that the generated power will be used solely for consumption.
“NOTICE is hereby given that GridX Africa Development Limited, a limited liability Company having its registered office at ICEA Building, Riverside Park, Waiyak Way. Westlands, PO Box, 67802-00200 in the Republic of Kenya, [“the Applicant”], pursuant to the provisions of the Energy Act, 2019, will on 10th December 2025 make an application to the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority for the Electric Power Generation Licence.” Read part of the notice.

According to the notice, the company will design, finance, and install an 8,520 kWp grid-tied, ground-mounted solar photovoltaic (PV) system at Abyssinia Iron and Steel Limited in Kisumu County.
Once installed, the system will generate electricity for the company’s own consumption, helping to reduce Abyssinia’s energy costs and lower carbon emissions in the county.
“GridX Africa Development Limited is developing, designing, financing, and in-stalling a 8520kWp grid-tied, ground-mounted solar PV system at Abyssinia Iron and Steel Limited, Kisumu [“Abyssinia”), Kisumu County with GPS Location: -0.07402891732346382, 34.79430196931364. The power generated will be used for their own consumption only. The system will reduce Abyssinia’s energy costs and carbon emissions.” Read part of the notice.

Additionally, they have confirmed that their energy will not harm the residents of Kisumu or its surroundings.
“The grant of the license will not have an adverse effect on any Public or Local Authorities, Companies, persons, or bodies of persons within the areas of the undertaking.” Read part of the statement.
Call for Public Participation
The public has been urged to present their views, adding that any submission or representation must be addressed in a letter to the energy authority and marked on the outside of the envelope, enclosing it with the “Energy Act”.
However, a copy of the objection or the representation must be forwarded to the registered office of the applicant on or before the end of thirty days from the date of application.
“Any public or local authority, company, person or body of persons desirous of making any representation on or objection to the application must do so by a let ter addressed to the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority and marked on the outside of the cover enclosing it “Energy Act”, on or before the expiration of Thirty (30) days from the date of application and a copy of such representation or objection must be forwarded to the registered office of the applicant.” Read the notice.

Gridx Africa Development Limited was founded by Chalker Kansteiner and Harry Lopes in 2017 and is owned by several institutional investors, including the Pembani Remgro Infrastructure Fund and the Pan African Capital Group.
