The Kenya Navy, a branch of the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF), guards over Kenya’s territorial waters, ensuring the security of its coastline, maritime trade routes, and national interests in the Indian Ocean.
The Navy conducts patrols, training missions, and cooperative operations with partner nations from its main base at Mtongwe Naval Base in Mombasa.
It operates 24/7, ensuring maritime security along Kenya’s 500 km coastline. When tension arises or naval aggression occurs, vessels immediately sail to the scene. Firefighting teams, medical units, and rescue protocols are always on standby
Kenya Navy Departments and Specialized Units
The Kenya Navy is structured to handle a range of operations through five key squadrons:
- First Fighting Ship Squadron – Responsible for frontline naval operations, including maritime patrols, surveillance, and defense of Kenya’s territorial waters.
- Second Fighting Ship Squadron – Supports combat operations and maritime security missions, including escort duties, patrols, and joint military operations.
- Logistics Ship Squadron – Handles transport and sea-lift operations, moving personnel, supplies, and equipment to military bases and operational areas.
- Special Operations Squadron – Conducts specialized missions such as maritime counterterrorism, coastal security operations, and rapid-response interventions against asymmetric threats.
- Fleet Maintenance Squadron – Responsible for the repair, maintenance, and technical readiness of naval vessels, ensuring ships and equipment remain operational and combat-ready.
The navy also has specialized units, including the Special Boat Unit (SBU) for counter-terrorism operations and the Clearance Diving Unit (CDU) for underwater explosive and reconnaissance operations.

Modern warships like the KNS Jasiri, 84.5 meters long with stealth capabilities and a top speed of 30 knots, are equipped to handle both combat and strategic operations.
Training of the Kenya Navy
Training of Kenya Navy soldiers takes place at the Kenya Naval Training College and includes practical exercises using full-mission bridge simulators that replicate harsh sea conditions, machinery breakdowns, and search-and-rescue missions.
Every operation, from Operation Linda Inch to Operation Sledgehammer, demonstrates the Navy’s ability to respond to threats and support regional security, including missions in Somalia.
Regular drills at Mtongwe Base ensure that all personnel are proficient in emergency responses, from firefighting to combat operations.
Operation At the Sea
Crew rotations follow a “watch and station system”, with personnel on duty for four hours followed by rest. This ensures 24/7 coverage during patrols.
In the event of significant damage, whether through accident or combat, the Navy has clearly defined protocols.
Teams trained in firefighting and damage control act swiftly to contain flames, plug leaks, and stabilize the ship.
Medical teams stand ready to treat injuries resulting from combat wounds or operational accidents.
Through advanced sensors and radar systems, both onshore and at sea, contacts are tracked and unidentified vessels are investigated.
When necessary, smaller fast boats are deployed to intercept, board, and search merchant ships under suspicion of illegal activities or unregistered entry into Kenyan waters.
These boarding missions are tactical and structured, ensuring that ships suspected of smuggling, trafficking, or other illicit activities are thoroughly inspected and, if violations are found, dealt with in accordance with Kenyan law.
