A family in Kirinyaga is seeking justice after their son reportedly drowned during a school excursion on Thursday, 8, 2024.
The trip, meant for prefects and high-achieving students from Karia Secondary School in Kirinyaga County, turned into a tragedy sparking more questions than answers.
Kirinyaga Central Sub-County Police Commander, John Totori confirmed the incident revealing that the drowning occurred at around 4 pm.
Despite immediate first aid efforts by first responders, including transport to a nearby hospital, the student died.
Speaking to the media, the deceased’s mother, Hannah Wanjiru expressed her son’s aspirations and sudden loss.
“I could not believe Eric was no more as I was told the school management took the best performers and prefects to the hotel. Eric was a Form Three prefect,” expressed the grieving mother.
Unanswered Questions to the School
Since then, the family was yet to get conclusive answers as to how their son died.

“My son had dreams. I saw him becoming a lawyer. Now all his visions are gone,” shared the emotional mother, seeking clarity and closure amidst the grief.
The family is eager to understand the circumstances surrounding the boy’s death.
“We want to know what happened because we were shocked to see the lifeless body of Eric in a local private hospital, though we expected his body at Kerugoya Hospital.”
“We want to know why detectives have been told to meet at Kerugoya Police Station,” demanded Paul Wanyoike, the deceased’s uncle.
“The boy should get his justice. Why didn’t the school take care of the kids.? Why did that hotel lack divers to protect the children? We want justice to be prevailed,” insisted the family.

The body of the deceased was transferred to Kerugoya County Referral Hospital, awaiting post-mortem examination.
“We have launched investigations, and we are telling the family to remain calm, and anybody found guilty will be prosecuted,” assured Torori.
