The government has received a major boost in its efforts to support victims of the Embakasi fire that claimed at least three lives.
Government spokesperson Isaac Mwaura announced that the United Nations among other organizations had contributed towards the initiative.
“We are truly grateful for the generous donation from UNHCR, which includes 1,000 blankets, 1,000 sleeping mats, 1,200 plastic tarpaulins, and 600 kitchen sets. This support is crucial in our immediate relief efforts,” said Mwaura.
“Our comprehensive response to this crisis includes the distribution of essential food and non-food items to meet the daily needs of those affected,” shared Mwaura.
The donations included assorted foodstuffs.
“We’ve delivered 680 bags of rice, 1,000 bags of beans, and 50 cartons of corned beef. Additionally, 600 blankets, 3,000 plates and spoons, 50 cartons of bar soaps, 20 bales of sanitary towels, and 600 portable stoves are being provided for further distribution to affected families, ensuring warmth and comfort.”

Nairobi County Government has stepped in by hosting victims, providing food and covering their medical bills.
“The Kenya Red Cross and UNFPA are supplying additional sanitary and bedding items, while the Ministry of Health has distributed trauma kits to hospitals, increasing medical personnel for better care,” added Mwaura.
The Ministry of Industry, Trade & Investments is focusing on economic recovery for the 72 affected business units.
At the same time, the World Health Organization provided 500 emergency kits for burns and fractures.

Embakasi Horror Fire
Embakasi fire broke out Thursday, 1, 2024-night days after another inferno reduced businesses premises to ashes at Jua Kali area near City Stadium in Nairobi County.
“Investigations into the fire’s cause are progressing, and we urge fellow Kenyans to join in our national effort by donating items and blood to assist those in need.”
At least three people lost their lives and over 300 others sustained various degrees of injuries.
Following the incident, President William ordered the sacking of government officials who colluded with the ill-fated gas station to get a license.
“I have instructed the Ministry that those officials who licensed the gas station in a residential area against the law to leave office by end of today and be jailed,” said Ruto.
Moments after the order, NEMA suspended four of its senior officers to pave way for investigations.
“Further, preliminary investigation has revealed that four NEMA officers unprocedurally processed the license and are therefore culpable.
“The Board therefore directs that the implicated officers step aside immediately pending further investigation by the relevant government agencies.
