Farmers countrywide are urged to embrace the rearing of donkeys as their waste products have great benefits.
The donkey is one of the animals overlooked over other domesticated animals.
Experts say that donkey poop is useful in eradicating insects and parasites, especially in crops. Moreover, according to them, using the animal’s waste is cost effective as compared to using the conventional chemicals from agro-vets.
Likewise, Mr. Onesmus Mwangangi, from INADES-Formation Kenya (IFK) stated that donkey poop and urine contain carbon and ammonium that helps expel pests. He further added that donkey waste is about 70% effective hence, not hazardous to the environment and human beings.
Similarly, Joseph Muindi who is a resident of Machakos County is one of the farmers who have used the products.
According to Joseph, donkey poop is locally available, and its use is cost effective.
Furthermore, Joseph observes that once dried, the poop smoke is mostly useful early in the morning or late in the evenings when the pests are dormant.
Similarly, the smoke is also used by beekeepers as it calms bees while either inspecting the hive, working around it, or harvesting honey.
Furthermore, Joseph states that 10mls of donkey urine is enough for a one knapsack sprayer and kills eggs and other dangerous organisms.
While speaking during farmers training in Ol-Kalou town, Nyandarua County, a section of farmers said the benefits of donkey poop was a new discovery to them and they are willing to embrace it.
Nevertheless, Mr. Mwangangi called on farmers to take care of their donkeys.
