Influential Voice Who Can Sway Kalonzo Into Working With Ruto

Political analyst Prof. Herman Manyora has warned politicians against dismissing Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka as a potential candidate in the 2027 presidential election.

Manyora said Kalonzo has been a prominent figure in public life and has held significant positions, including serving as Vice President for a full term.

He explained that former President Uhuru Kenyatta is the only political figure who can persuade Kalonzo to team up with President William Ruto.

Manyora said the two leaders maintain a good political relationship, and if Uhuru works with Ruto, Kalonzo might be persuaded to align with UDA in the next election.

Kalonzo has a special relationship with Uhuru. I have said that if Uhuru were to work for Ruto, he would very easily target Kalonzo. I would like to hear Uhuru target Kalonzo, same with Matiang’i. I have said these are people over whom Uhuru can exert influence. So, if I hear that Uhuru is trying to influence Kalonzo or Matiang’i, not just anybody.

Why Ruto Wants Kalonzo

Manyora said Kalonzo is the focus because he is likely to be the flagbearer of the United Opposition in 2027.

He stated that Kalonzo appears to be the candidate most opposition leaders could support.

“The reason why they might focus on Kalonzo is that it does seem to many people that he might be the one to get the ticket. He looks like the compromised candidate,” Manyora said.

Manyora explained that Kalonzo remains the key player at the table despite all that has been said about him.

He said Gachagua cannot step aside for any other politician except Kalonzo.

The analyst stated that Gachagua will run for President if Kalonzo is not made the party’s flagbearer.

“All of them will compromise for Kalonzo. Because Gachagua cannot compromise for Matiang’i and vice versa,” he added.

“If Kalonzo does not get this opportunity, then Gachagua will run. Kalonzo only becomes a compromise because Gachagua intends to run, and he can only compromise on Kalonzo.”

Why He Might Win

He emphasized that Kalonzo is a significant figure, despite some shortcomings.

Manyora said Kalonzo might not be as energetic as Ruto and former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, but he still has a good chance of winning.

However, he pointed out that former Presidents: Mzee Jomo Kenyatta, Daniel Arap Moi, and Mwai Kibaki were not fiery politicians.

He said the three former heads of state were not flamboyant but managed to reach the top position.

He noted that he does not play politics the way Raila and Ruto do. But they should also remember that nobody gave Moi and Kibaki a chance, yet they became Presidents.

“He is on the right path, aligned with the likes of Moi, Kibaki, and Kenyatta—people who have been charismatic, dramatic, and daring but did not always make it,” Manyora said.
