Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) Deputy Party Leader Cleophas Malala has cautioned President William Ruto and Interior Cabinet Secretary (CS) Kipchumba Murkomen against threats to arrest former Deputy President (DP) Rigathi Gachagua.
Speaking on August 18, Malala stated that the government cannot arrest Gachagua when he returns to the country on Thursday, August 21, 2025.
Malala said the plans to arrest Gachagua are mere threats and cannot be carried out.
He mentioned that the statements linking the Kenyan government to Al-Shabaab and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) are public information.
Those are ordinary threats. The government often speaks, but there is nothing it can do. Gachagua cannot be arrested at the airport. Why should he be detained? For claiming that Ruto was meeting with Al-Shabaab and RSF? I am also asserting that he met with RSF leaders. It is public knowledge; let them come and arrest me. Why wait for Gachagua to travel from the U.S.?
These matters are in the public domain; even the U.S. Senate is discussing them. Sudan has accused Kenya of interfering with its sovereignty.
“So, these issues originate from Gachagua. If they want Gachagua to record a statement, it must be at the U.S. Senate or ICC. We cannot record a statement against those we are filing a complaint with,” he said.
He warned that thousands of people from across the country will come to welcome Gachagua, and it will be impossible to prevent.
Malala also cautioned that attempting to arrest Gachagua could cause chaos amid the ongoing African Nations Championship (CHAN).
Thousands will turn out to welcome Gachagua. Where will you arrest him? If you detain Gachagua and protests erupt, and the CHAN tournament is happening, what will the President be thinking?

Malala Says DCP Party Will Hold Protests
Malala said DCP supporters will hold protests in accordance with the Constitution if Gachagua is arrested.
He warned that such demonstrations could cause disruptions along Thika Road, which leads to Kasarani Stadium.
“If Gachagua is detained for a day, do you think Thika Road will be passable? Where will people watch CHAN? There will be tear gas, and clashes will ensue until he is freed. So Ruto has a choice,” Malala said.
Furthermore, Malala stated that their supporters will not remain silent if Gachagua is intimidated.
He said Gachagua called for peace even after he was impeached, but that will not be the case if he is arrested.

Murkomen to Stop Belittling the Issue
Malala urged Murkomen to stop trivialising Gachagua’s arrest.
He stated that such action could lead to chaos and disrupt the Harambee Stars’ quarter-finals match against Madagascar.
“This time around, you won’t arrest Ruto and the country to keep silent. He was impeached, but he told people to be peaceful. This time around, we will not take it lying down. Enough is enough; you must allow democracy to prevail,” he said.
“Murkomen should understand that this is no small matter. On Friday, there are quarter-finals, and if Gachagua is arrested on Thursday, what will Murkomen be thinking?”
